Honda shared that the steering gearbox worm wheel may expand when warm or damp. This can decrease the amount of grease between the worm wheel and worm gear.
Plus, the worm gear spring’s preload may have been set too high, causing the parts to slide against each other with too much force.
The expansion of the components and extra friction may cause strange steering noises, cause the steering to stick, and make it harder to steer. This increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
To correct the problem, drivers must take their Honda SUVs and cars to a local dealership for service. The worm gear spring will be replaced and technicians will add grease as needed at no cost to owners.
Honda will notify all owners at risk by November 18. Contact Honda at 888-234-2136 for more information. Honda’s recall numbers for this issue are SJS, MJU, QJT, and VJV.
