Ford has announced a recall of 115,000 2021 and 2022 Bronco Sport and Escape models over defects with the rear brake linings. The problem can affect braking performance according to Ford. It says it is “conducting research to determine approximately how many vehicles are affected” right now. 

So far, it says it estimates 114,996 Bronco Sport and Escapes are affected. This number is based on the safety recall report on the NHTSA website. Ford says that the rear brake linings were not made properly. More force may need to be applied to the brakes “during certain situations.” 

Stopping distances could increase says Ford

This could increase the distance needed to stop the vehicle, which could “increase the risk of a crash.” So far, the automaker says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defective brake linings. Continental Automotive Mexicana is the manufacturer of the brakes. 

While it is validating a service fix, Ford says it will replace front and rear brake linings for now with a higher friction design. This is only a temporary remedy, according to Automotive News. High friction linings may wear out quicker than medium or low friction linings. 

Five recalls for Bronco Sport this year alone

The Bronco Sport has seen five recalls already in 2021. The first one was in January for rear-drive units seizing from improper lubrication. Also included in this recall were Edge, Lincoln Nautilus, Escape, and Lincoln Corsair models as well as the Bronco Sport. 

In February Ford issued two recalls. One was for a replacement of the lower control arms. Failure could result in a rollover or other potentially catastrophic accident. The other was for loose rear suspension bolts, which could also increase the risk of a crash. 

Ford issued a recall for fuel delivery issues in August. The problem can be remedied by replacing fuel delivery modules. And in October, the recall was due to moonroof glass potentially separating from the vehicle. 

There are an awful lot of recalls

Unfortunately, multiple recalls are becoming more common. Not only with Ford, but seemingly with all of the automakers. And a combination of COVID-related shutdowns, supplier issues, and the development of electric vehicles have added to the complexities of producing cars. The hope is that as ICE vehicles slowly get phased out, the less complex EVs will see fewer recalls.
