Recall Alert: 121,000 Mazda SUVs and Cars Have Faulty Fuel Pumps
Listen up! If you have a Mazda SUV or coupe, sedan, or hatchback, then your vehicle could be at risk of randomly stalling. The Mazda CX-5, CX-9, CX-3, MX-5 Miata, Mazda3, Mazda6, and Mazda2 may have faulty fuel pumps.
121,000 Mazda SUVs are cars could have engine pump problems
Over 121,000 Mazda SUVs and cars are being recalled due to the risk of fuel pump failure. This problem could cause the engine to stall randomly.
The Mazda models at risk include:
- 2019 CX-3 SUVs
- 2018 – 2019 Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 SUVs
- 2018 – 2019 MX-5 Mazda Miata coupes
- 2018 Mazda3 and Mazda6 hatchbacks and sedans
- 2019 – 2020 Mazda2 hatchbacks
The cause of this issue is related to the impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pumps. This part draws fuel from the gas tank and sends it to the high-pressure fuel pump. The impeller may crack or lose its shape, causing the fuel pump to fail.
As a result, the engine may randomly stall, increasing the risk of crashes and accidents. Also, the vehicles may not start. The stalling may occur while the vehicle is in park or in traffic. So, it’s best to get your vehicle checked out. Although, no accidents, injuries, or deaths have been reported as a result of this defect.
The fuel pumps are from a batch of over two million fault units manufactured by Denso, an automotive supplier. They were installed on vehicles produced by Ford, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Honda, Lexus, and Acura.
Toyota has already recalled over three million vehicles, but not all of them had faulty fuel pumps. More recalls may follow soon.
What to do if your Mazda is at risk
If your Mazda SUV or car is at risk, the Mazda will notify you. Mazda currently plans to start notifying owners by January 11, 2022. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact Mazda at 800-222-5500.
But January 11 is weeks away. You can learn if your Mazda CX-5, Miata, hatchback, or sedan is at risk sooner by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) site here. Enter your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) online.
You can also call the NHSTA at 888-327-4236. The NHTSA number for this recall is 21V875, and the Mazda number for this recall is 5321k.
Is Mazda fixing this issue?
Yes, if your Mazda SUV or car is at risk, return to a dealership. Technicians will inspect your vehicle’s fuel pump and replace it if necessary free of charge. We are currently unsure about how long this process will take.
We recommend calling ahead or scheduling an appointment online to avoid long waiting times. You do not have to return to the same dealership where you purchased your vehicle. Any local Mazda dealership should be fine.
