According to Cars.com, General Motors is issuing their second recall in three months for multiple large SUV models with faulty seatbelts. The 2021 Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade have improved third rows from the previous generation, but it looks like they haven’t gotten the seat belts right just yet.

The recall covers the entire 2021 GM full-size SUV lineup. Every 2021 model year Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade, and Yukon is at risk. The issue involves the backseat outboard seat belts.

They may have been entrapped or misrouted behind the outboard seat-folding mechanism. As a result, the seat belts may be damaged. They could break during an accident, increasing the risk of injuries.

What if my General Motors SUV is at risk?

If you have a 2021 Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, or Cadillac Escalade model that’s at risk, GM will begin notifying owners around May 3. But that’s nearly five weeks away! You don’t have to wait to be notified.

You can contact Cadillac at 800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 800-222-1020, or GMC at 800-8782 if you have any questions. Also, you can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) at 888-327-4236 or visit their website here to enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and learn more.

If your vehicle is at risk, GM dealers will inspect the third-row outboard sear belts and reroute or replace damaged units for free. You do not have to return to the same dealership where you purchased your SUV. A local dealership will be fine.

However, remember to call in advance or check online to schedule an appointment. This way, you can learn what Coronavirus (COVID-19) precautions the dealership has in place. This can help you avoid long wait times too.

What was the last seat belt recall about?

If you have trouble recalling the last seat belt recall, don’t worry. We have the answer for you right here. Fine, that pun was pretty lame, but we couldn’t resist.

Anyway, according to Car and Driver, over 600,000 2019 – 2021 model year Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, GMC Yukon, and Sierra, trucks, and SUVs were recalled due to a seat belt defect.

This recall includes heavy-duty Chevy Silverado and Sierra trucks too. But the issue doesn’t affect the 2019 Silverado and Sierra models built on the previous generation’s platform. Owners were notified around February 1 about this issue.

You may notice a rattling noise from the center seat or console area if your vehicle is at risk. Also, the center seatbelt in the front may become loose or detached. This is because the vehicles may have improperly installed seat belt brackets in the center of the front row.

As a result, the passenger in the center of the front row may not be properly restrained, increasing the risk of injury in an accident or hard braking event. General Motors will inspect and reassemble the seat belt brackets for free.
