Subaru has issued a recall concerning specific Impreza models’ faulty brake lights. The malfunction could lead to accidents, but the fix is rather simple. Here’s what you need to know about the 2023 Subaru Impreza recall and how to get your sedan or hatchback repaired for free.

The 2023 Subaru Impreza recall involves the brake lights. They can activate even if the driver never touches the brake pedal. The issue affects specific sedan and hatchback models.

No accidents have been reported, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t happen. Many drivers rely on brake lights to know when the car in front is slowing or stopping. If someone is driving behind an Impreza and notices the brake lights are on even though the driver is not slowing, they might assume the driver is riding with their foot on the brake and not intending to stop. That could result in a wreck when the Impreza driver really does slow down or stop.

At this time, the recall includes 4,000 Impreza models. Subaru believes the problem is an “improperly adjusted” stop lamp switch. That’s why the brake lights turn on by themselves.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers also could start and shift the transmission out of “Park” without pressing the brake. That could be dangerous because drivers might find the car moving when they thought it was safely parked.

That isn’t the only Subaru model to be hit with a recall recently. 2019 to 2022 Ascent models have a more dangerous problem that prompted the automaker to recall more than 271,000 SUVs. This is due to the risk of fire because an electrical grounding bolt might have been improperly fastened to the cabin heating system. 

In addition, 2017 to 2019 Impreza models were recalled. That problem involves dim headlights.

The recall doesn’t officially begin until June 23, 2023. Owners with vehicles included in this recall will be notified by letter. If you wish to get your Impreza fixed sooner, you can ask your dealer to fix the stop lamp switch.
