Recall Alert: BMW SUVs Are Equipped With Deadly Takata Airbags
If you drive a BMW, pay attention to this dangerous recall. Some BMW models like the BMW X3, X4, and X5 have an explosive problem that should be remedied as soon as possible. A DO NOT DRIVE warning has been issued.
BMW SUV recall alert for Takata airbags
BMW has issued a Do not Drive warning for roughly 90,000 SUVs due to a dangerous airbag issue. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between 2000 and 2014, so it spans plenty of different makes and models.
The SUVs involved include:
- 2008 – 2013 BMW 1 Series models
- 2000 – 2013 BMW 3 Series models
- 2000 – 2003 BMW 5 Series models
- 2013 – 2015 BMW X1 models
- 2007 – 2010 BMW X3 models
- 2000 – 2004/2007 – 2013 BMW X5 models
- 2008 – 2014 BMX X6 models
These BMW SUVs are equipped with driver’s front airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. They may cause the airbags to explode, sending shrapnel through the cabin. This may injure or kill drivers and passengers.
At least 26 people have been killed by Takata airbag inflators since 2009 in the United States, and 30 people have died worldwide. There are also 400 reports of related injuries.
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration NHTSA is currently investigating over 30,000,000 Takata inflators, and 19 other automotive makers have issued recalls for them.
Takata (which is no longer in business) used volatile aluminum nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate the airbags as needed. The chemical can deteriorate over time, especially when exposed to heat and humidity, causing it to explode.

You can learn more by calling 888-594-3832. The process is pretty straightforward. You must take your vehicle to a local BMW dealership for service. You don’t have to return to the same location where you purchased your vehicle.
The BMW mechanics will replace the Takata airbag inflator at no cost to owners. We recommend calling ahead or scheduling an appointment online to avoid long waiting times.
