The NHTSA and Ferrari have announced a recall. The recall involves rear windows are not bonding the way they should. 1,063 units are affected by the recall in the USA. 

What vehicle is part of the recall

The 2018-2020 model years of the 812 Superfast are the subject of the recall. They were made between June 20, 2017, and June 15, 2020. Fortunately, Ferrari is a low volume manufacturer. So, the recall will probably be handled quickly. 

What is the recall about

Ferrari started an investigation after three reports came in during May of this year regarding problems with the rear window. Supposedly, the rear windows just fell out. So, Ferrari analyzed the situations and determined that the window bonding process had been compromised. This led to the loss of the windows. According to the NHTSA, 

“The rear window could fully detach from the vehicle, creating a road hazard and increasing the safety-risk of a crash for following traffic”

What is being done for the recall

Both the window and the adhesive have to be replaced under the recall. So, 1,063 owners in the United States will be receiving notices via first class mail. The NHTSA reference number for the action is 20V-614. Owners can also contact their dealers to discuss scheduling the free repair. 

In the meantime, changes were made to the production line immediately. 

The Ferrari 812 Superfast

The Ferrari 812 Superfast is a stunning V12 exotic two-seat sportscar. Priced at over $330,000, its front-mounted 6.5-liter powerplant pumps out 788 horsepower. The car has a top speed of 211 mph. The 0-60 mph time was tested by Car and Driver. They put it at 2.8 seconds. They said of the 2020 model, 

“The 2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast is an example of what happens when an automaker commits to crafting a vehicle that offers the best performance money can buy.”

Perhaps recognizing the emergence of electrification in the automotive industry, The Drive said of the Ferrari 812 Superfast,

“The 812 Superfast is part of a long line of front-engine, rear-drive grand tourers, a setup whose increasing obsolescence forced Ferrari to throw every trick in the book at it to keep up with the times.”

Ferrari internal combustion engines may not be around long

As stunning as the Ferrari 812 design is, and as impressive the performance is, the writing may be on the wall for internal combustion engines from Ferrari. They have already announced that they are making a family of V6 hybrid engines. It wouldn’t be surprising if the company soon goes to full-electric, given that the all-electric Tesla Model S is a third of the price, offers seating for more adults, and is faster to 60 mph. The 0-60 mph time for the Tesla Model S is advertised at 2.3 seconds for the Performance package, and less than two seconds for the Plaid package. 

Ferrari possibly switching propulsion systems doesn’t belittle the jaw-dropping design and stellar performance of the 812 Superfast. It is an outstanding performer in both categories. Sadly, some might have back window problems. But, Ferrari will not let a back window issue sully its reputation. The windows will be fixed quickly by the manufacturer.
