The recall of Hyundai Tucson SUVs just keeps expanding. Back in September, a recall of Tucson models involved 2019-2021 years of production. But now, it goes back to 2016. That’s almost 500,000 more Hyundai Tucson SUVs for a grand total of 650,000.

Hyundai confirms a dozen incidents of fires

The concern is that electrical shorts can lead to fires. Hyundai confirms a dozen incidents of fires but, thankfully, no injuries. The electrical shorts are occurring in the antilock braking system’s computer. As they recommended before Hyundai is advising owners to park their Tucson SUVs outside and away from structures in case they spontaneously catch on fire. 

The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally causing an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire. The NHTSA says owners will be notified later in February with details and what to do. Previous recalls have advised owners to schedule with their Hyundai dealer to correct the problem. Interestingly, the fix involves replacing the computer’s fuse. For 2019-2021 Tucson models it also required a software update.

While replacing the fuse will eliminate the potential for a fire it is probably just a stopgap measure. It doesn’t fix the problem of corrosion shorting the HECU. That involves replacing the corroded component and shielding it better than from the factory to prevent further corrosion.

The Tucson is Hyundai’s best-selling model worldwide

The Tucson is Hyundai’s best-selling model worldwide. In 2019 it was updated with a facelift and changes that included engine options. Besides the exterior changes, the interiors were substantially changed. Numerous safety features were added. 

In 2021 Hyundai introduced the 2022 fourth generation of the Tucson. Both a short and long version are made, though the US only gets the long-wheelbase version. A fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen were featured.  Cargo volume was upped to almost 39 cu ft. 

A plug-in hybrid version of the Tucson is expected soon

The body has received more sculpting with squared-off wheel openings in pronounced blisters. A plug-in hybrid version of the Tucson is expected soon giving 28 miles of zero-emission range. It is powered by a 1.6-liter T-GDi engine with a 44 kW motor. The main engine choice is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 hp. 

Hyundai has also decided to manufacture the new Tucson in the US. It will be added to its Montgomery, Alabama, assembly line.
