Recall Alert: Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer Airbags Could Be Disabled
Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models could have their airbags disabled due to a software issue. If you own one of these models, you’ve spent more than enough money to expect an SUV in perfect working order. The most expensive Grand Wagoneer model costs over $110,000, but its airbags don’t work. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) discovered the problem, and Jeep will recall many units.
Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer software issue
According to the NHTSA, the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer’s Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) may have incorrect software. What that means is without alerting anyone, it can disable driver, passenger, and knee airbags. If you were to get into a crash, there would be no airbags, which is highly dangerous. Luckily, Jeep will be issuing recalls for most of these models to fix the issue asap.
According to Motor1, dealers will only have to reprogram the module to fix the problem. If that’s the case, Jeep’s recall remedy will take only a few minutes and, as always, is entirely free. The NHTSA says 99,255 Jeeps could be affected by the incorrect software. Some Grand Cherokee L models are also included in that number, but far fewer are affected than the Wagoneer models.
What can owners do until the recall is fixed?
If you own one of the affected Jeep models, it might be best to drive the vehicle as little as possible. Most people can’t afford to do that, so it’s best to get the ball rolling on a fix. We’d recommend calling local Jeep dealerships and asking about the recall, and they should be able to schedule an appointment. That might be important to take care of asap, as the nearly 100,000 other customers will be doing the same thing soon.
Most recalls take a long time because they require new parts to get to the dealer’s location. For this particular case, we’re not sure if any parts are needed. If the SUVs only need their module reprogrammed, customers should get it fixed right away. Although Jeep hasn’t officially issued the recall yet, so you might need to wait to hear from the automaker.
How much does a Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer cost?
If you’re in the market for a big SUV, these might be two options on the radar. The Jeep Wagoneer models have not historically had many issues, and this one is easily remedied. It shouldn’t wholly steer you away from the model. Although what might do that is the price tag because both are pretty expensive.
The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer starts at $68,845, and the Grand Wagoneer starts at $86,995. The latter can easily exceed $90,000 or even $100,000, making it very costly. Although the Grand Wagoneer has some of the most remarkable features you could ask for in a large SUV.
Owners of a Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUV could have their airbags disabled. The repair should be quick and easy, so take care of it as soon as possible. It could be extremely dangerous to drive around with disabled airbags. If you’ve spent $100,000 on an SUV, you probably want to make sure the airbags work.
