If you have a Ram heavy-duty truck, then you might want to see if your truck is involved with this recall. Ram HD trucks and chassis cabs are being recalled due to the potential risk of catching on fire. 

Recall for Ram Heavy-Duty trucks 

Over 131,000 Ram heavy-duty trucks are being recalled because the intake heater grid poses a potential fire risk. Trucks at risk include the model year 2021 – 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500 HD trucks. The recall also involves 3500, 4500, and 5500 chassis cabs that are equipped with the Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel engine. 

According to Cars.com, an internal investigation found that the intake heater-grid relay in certain models may overheat, leading to an electrical fire. This may increase the risk of accidents or injuries. While Ram is aware of one potential warranty claim and seven fires, they are unaware of any related accidents or injuries. 

What to do if your Ram truck is at risk 

If you have a 2021 – 2022 Ram heavy-duty truck that is equipped with the Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel engine, then do not park indoors. The fire could spread to the surrounding area. Please note that the electrical fault could cause a fire even when the engine is turned off. 

Ram currently doesn’t have a fix for this issue, so you’ll have to wait a bit. Owners will be notified then their trucks can be taken into a service center for a free recall-related repair. You should be able to take your truck to any Ram dealership. 

Generally, owners do not have to return to the same location where they purchased their truck. However, it’s recommended to call ahead or to schedule an appointment online in advance to cut down on waiting time.

Is the Ram Cummins engine reliable? 

If you have a Ram heavy-duty truck with a 6.7-liter turbo-diesel Cummins engine, don’t fret. It’s a reliable and powerful engine with up to 400 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. With proper maintenance and care, this engine can last beyond 350,000 miles. 

However, despite being a good engine, no engine is perfect. The turbocharger can get clogged, which reduces the amount of power and can strain the engine. You can replace the turbocharger with an updated part if your older truck faces this issue. 

Over time, after long trips, towing multiple heavy loads and using your Ram heavy-duty truck as a daily driver may take a toll on the exhaust manifold. It has to withstand excessive heat. But replacement parts tend to hold their shape a little better. 

While upgrading your truck, you may notice the dreaded check engine light on the dashboard, The computer needs to register the presence of the new part, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that something has failed.
