Toward the end of 2020, GM began finding seat bolt issues with plenty of its models. Toward the end of December, GM issued its first seat bolt recall. The recall included the 2021 Chevy Suburban and Tahoe, as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. From there, the problem reared its ugly head in the brand-new 2021 Escalade. However, according to CarComplaints, there is a brand-new dangerous bolt defect in select 2020 and 2021 models.

This isn’t the first Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac bolt-related recall

Before we dive in, it is worth noting that this newest recall is on top of the current GM recall that reportedly affects over 624,000 vehicles for faulty seat belts, says Consumer Reports. On December 19th, 2020, CarComplaints reported that GM recalled almost 100 Chevy and GMC SUVs for loose or missing seat bolts. In short, seat removal during assembly resulted in the seat bolts being incorrectly installed on these models.

From there, the recall moved from GMC and Chevy over to Cadillac with the 2021 Escalade. Despite having different seats and other trim options, the SUVs’ architectural similarities meant the luxury SUV was also affected. The main issue here is that if the bolts that secure the seat are loose, they may not hold the seat during a crash.

This newest recall reported by CarComplaints also covers faulty bolts used on popular 2021 and 2020 models. In this instance, GM utilized the wrong set of bolts to secure seat belts in various models, says CarComplaints. As a result, the seat belts may not work fully as designed. This means that plenty of 2021 GMC, Chevy, and Cadillac models may not provide adequate protection in a crash due to these mismatched bolts.

Which models should you look out for?

The saving grace for this specific GMC, Chevy, and Cadillac recall is that it doesn’t currently affect a large batch of vehicles. According to CarComplaints, the recall affects a total of 470 vehicles. Unfortunately, however, this small number of vehicles affected still covers a wide variety of models. As of writing, we don’t know exactly how many of each model suffers from this defect.

According to CarComplaints, the recall affects these Chevy models: 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV, 2021 Chevrolet Blazer, 2021 Chevrolet Camaro, 2021 Chevrolet Colorado, 2021 Chevrolet Equinox, 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2021 Chevrolet 2500, 2021 Chevrolet 3500, 2021 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe.

If you’ve got a GMC, these are the ones to watch out for: 2021 GMC Canyon, 2021 GMC Sierra 1500, 2021 GMC 2500, 2021 GMC 3500, 2021 GMC Yukon, and 2021 GMC Yukon XL

From Cadillac, there are just two models included in the recall, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, and 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV

Unfortunately, this latest recall reported by CarComplaints does not offer a comprehensive breakdown by models affected. As a result, we don’t know many of each aforementioned model falls under that original 470 affected number. However, as the recall officially begins, we may learn more specifics of which models are the most affected.

CarComplaints reports that GM is currently aware of which vehicles may be affected and is taking steps to contact owners to schedule a repair. CarComplaints reports that the recall is expected to begin on February 6th, 2021.
