If you have a 2022 Ford Super Duty truck, then you might need to take it in for service. The 2022 Ford F-250 and F-350 might have exploding airbags. This issue is similar to the ongoing problem presented by Takata airbags. 

Ford Super Duty recall alert for exploding airbags 

There is a recall for 2022 Ford Super Duty trucks due to the risk of exploding airbags. The Ford F-250 and the Ford F-350 are the affected models. The airbag covers may break apart and launch fragments toward vehicle occupants. This increases the risk of injuries. 

Ford will begin notifying owners at risk in about a month. However, that’s a long time to wait. You can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site to see if your truck needs service. 

Once you go to the site, enter your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The NHTSA identifier for this recall is 21V923. You can also call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-7332 or Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 for more information. 

If your Ford F-250 or F-350 is at risk, then dealers will replace the driver-side airbag module for free. You don’t have to return to the same dealership where you purchased your truck for service. 

Any Ford dealership will be fine. But we recommend calling ahead or scheduling an appointment online to avoid long wait times. 

The Super Duty issue is familiar  

The recall for Ford Super Duty pickup trucks involves airbag housings that may break apart if they are used. This issue is similar to other problems related to airbag housing units that were experienced during the Takata airbag recalls. 

We keep seeing more and more airbag and airbag housing problems due to the Takata airbag safety recalls. The issues can be traced back to the decision to use ammonium nitrate as the propellant when airbags are deployed. The design of the airbag housings was also slightly changed. 

Recalls for Takata airbags started to emerge in 2000 – 2010. However, it wasn’t until 2015 when the NHSTA ordered significant recalls to fix the exploding airbags. 

According to Torque News, Takata tried to sweep these problems under the rug. But their plan didn’t work. The recall involved 19 auto manufacturers and 55 million vehicles. Some of which are still involved. 

Is the Ford F-250 and F-350 problem dangerous? 

The Ford Super Duty recall has the potential to be dangerous. However, Ford is unaware of any injuries related to this problem with the F-250 and F-350. But the Takata units were quite deadly and resulted in 17 deaths in the United States. 

It turns out that the use of ammonium nitrate propellant became unstable over time. As a result, the airbag housings would randomly explode, sending sharp shrapnel through the entire vehicle. More deaths and injuries related to this issue were reported around the world. 

The Ford Super Duty problem doesn’t seem to be as dangerous or as massive as the Takata airbag recall. However, it should still be taken seriously. Make sure your Ford F-250 or Ford F-350 is safe for you, your family, friends, and other drivers around you.
