The Ford F-150 and Super Duty pickups are seeing a multitude of recalls, just like their cousins the Ford Explorer. What’s going on at Ford? Two separate issues have resulted in a recall for a wiring issue in the F-150, and F-250 trucks rolling away. Both cause for concern, these are problems with brand new 2022 trucks, which is not the first. 

Recall upon recall for Ford F-150 trucks

This latest recall falls on the heels of an earlier one that affected over 600,000 Ford products with windshield wiper motor problems. And that was the second one for the 2022 Super Duty. And likewise, the F-150 has seen two previous recalls. Yikes.

With that as background, we have the latest recalls. Steering column wiring stretched beyond its elasticity when extended resulted in this recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains that ”damaged or separated wiring may result in the steering column not moving as intended in certain crash conditions.”

The issue surfaced from two different F-150 assembly plants. Trucks affected were manufactured at the Ford Dearborn Truck plant between September 2021 and February 2022. Also, from the Ford Kansas City plant F-150 trucks built between October 2021 and February 2022. 

Ford F-250 Super Duty trucks are not immune from recalls

For the F-250 Super Duty, trucks built with the Ford is also recalling F-250 trucks equipped with 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel engines. This is over the possibility of rolling away due to problems with the transmission. In the 10-speed automatic transmission, a washer can deteriorate to the point of disintegration. 

This creates obstructions from the debris of the washer’s disintegration. The Park function can be compromised, which can lead to trucks seeming in Park, when not. This results in a roll away potential. 

Almost 25,000 trucks are affected, built between October 2019 and September 2020 at the Kentucky Truck plant, and during the same period from the Ford Ohio plant. The recall number is 22S22 for the F-150 and 22S24 for Super Duty trucks.

This recall is only the latest in a series of F-150 recalls

Though there has been a gang of F-150 recalls over the last couple of years, for 2022 there have been three others before this latest. The main one was over driveshafts fracturing. As you may or may not know, the F-150 uses aluminum driveshafts to save weight. Under torque conditions, the driveshafts have fractured.

The other 2022 recall was over software errors that involved electric or electric over hydraulic brake systems. The brake systems software might not brake. With the loss of the trailer brake, stopping distances increase, which can lead to a crash. Notices should have already gone out to F-250 owners.
