A Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid is coming in 2022. You might be thinking there’s already an Outlander plug-in hybrid, so what kind of announcement is that? Well, the current plug-in hybrid model is actually of the previous generation. A new generation and redesign of the Mitsubishi Outlander was released for the 2022 model year, but the plug-in hybrid version is still of the old generation. Coming in 2022, the new generation will receive a completely redesigned Outlander plug-in hybrid. Mitsubishi shared some information about the new variant of Outlander, including a few photos and a rough idea of the date of availability.

The all-new Outlander PHEV comes with a redesign, but also brand new features and amenities. First and most importantly, it adds a third row of seats. It’s gotten quite difficult to compete in the SUV market without three rows of seats. The smallest and largest SUVs are able to sit at least seven, so it’s essential a PHEV like the Outlander does the same. The standard version already seats seven, so it was only a matter of time before the PHEV upgraded.

The new hybrid’s gas-electric powertrain will have an improved electric motor and battery capacity. Though the official EPA estimates aren’t available yet, it is safe to assume the distance on battery power alone will be increased. The current Outlander gets 24 miles on strictly battery power. It also gets 24 city and 31 highway miles per gallon, which will likely see a good jump up with the new PHEV variant. It boasts a 13.8 kWh battery, four-wheel-drive, and a 25 minute charging time to reach 80%.

When will the Mitubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid be available?

The Outlander PHEV is scheduled to release sometime in the final half of 2022 for the 2023 model year. This availability has only been announced for the US market. The 2022 Outlander starts at $26,095. It currently is available in five different trims ranging from the base SE all the way up to SEL Launch Edition.

For the 2022 model year, new connectivity features and driver-assistance technology have been added to the Mitsubishi Outlander. The automaker significantly improved the interior with nicer materials and a more simple design. The current engine is nothing to get excited about, which is why next year’s PHEV version looks so interesting.

Will the Nissan Rogue get a PHEV variant next?

Is the Nissan Rogue next up to get a plug-in hybrid variant? That seems like a ridiculous question after an announcement for the Mitsubishi Outlander. The Nissan Rogue actually shares a platform and powertrain with the Outlander. Usually, the two will follow similar design patterns and additional features for that reason. It is very likely that Nissan will be the next to announce a plug-in hybrid Rogue for the 2023 model year. Though it hasn’t happened yet, we expect an announcement from Nissan on the subject soon, if there is one.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain would be welcomed into the Rogue lineup. Currently, the only engine available is the 2.5-liter four-cylinder getting around 181-hp. Adding a more fuel-efficient version would bolster the lineup, and possibly even convince Nissan to add PHEV versions to other models. That is if the Rogue PHEV was released and sold well.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is not the strongest option in its class presently. With some boosts to power, fuel economy, and technology features, it could catch the competition quickly. The plug-in hybrid variant adds something many other SUVs are, helping Mitsubishi to catch up. It’s always good to see an additional engine added to a vehicle’s lineup. The Outlander is in need of more variety and more to help it stand out, so the PHEV version is a step in the right direction.
