The most reliable V8 engine for full-size trucks just got dropped
Not to be insensitive, but another one bites the dust. Durable V8 engines keep getting the ax as trucks brands go greener. The most reliable V8 engine from 2024 will not return in 2024, leaving us to gamble on twin-turbo V6 engines instead.
The most reliable V8 engine for full-size trucks was discontinued
It’s time to officially say goodbye to the most reliable V8 engine for full-size trucks in 2024. It’s actually available with the Ram 1500, which is a bit of a surprise.
The Ram 1500 has been improving its reliability scores during the past few years but doesn’t have the same reputation for durability as the Toyota Tundra.
Anyways, the 2024 Ram 1500 has an available 5.7-liter V8 engine with 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. It has a reliability rating of 89 out of 100 from J.D.Power, which is incredibly high.
Scores between 70 and 80 are average, while scores between 81 and 90 are above-average. Anything between 91 and 100 is best. It’s rare to see a score above 85 and I’ve never seen anything do better than an 89.
This isn’t the only Ram V8 engine that’s going out to pasture. The available supercharged 6.7-liter V8 engine with 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque was also discontinued. It was used in the beefy Ram 1500 TRX model.
The 2025 Ram 1500 is replacing its older V8 options with the new Hurricane engine. The new twin-turbocharged charred online-six engine has two output levels.
With the Standard Output variant, you get 420 hp and 469 lb-ft of torque. Upgrade to the High Output option for 540 hp and 521 lb-ft of torque.
For 2025, the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 both offer V8 engines. However, the Ford Raptor R doesn’t face real competition with its 720 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque.
It will be interesting to see which remaining option will be the most reliable V8 engine for full-size trucks in 2025 as the competition dwindles.
