Complaints about the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E experiencing brake issues have caused Ford to release a technical service bulletin to dealers. Titled “Vibration/Pulsation From Brakes-Brake Pad Material Stuck To Rotor,” if that’s not the longest title we don’t know what is. So without even opening up the bulletin, Ford gives everything the dealer tech needs to know to fix the problem right in the title.  

Mustang Mach-E brake issues are over replacement pads

The problem seems to be that the brake pads have V-channels running through them, but the replacement pads don’t. So brake material is becoming stuck to the rotors instead of being shed off through the V-channels according to CarComplaints. 

Besides replacing the pads Ford will also replace the brake caliper bolts. Rotors will be resurfaced to mill off any residual brake material attached to them. If machining the rotors puts them below the allowable thickness specs allowed, the dealer will replace them. 

“Some 2021 Mustang Mach-E vehicles may exhibit a vibration or pulsation from the brakes. This may be due to brake pad material bonded to the rotor. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the brake pads and resurface the rotors.” — Ford TSB 21-2206

Right now the technical service bulletin negates a recall

Normally, technical service bulletins forego a recall if the problem doesn’t continue. Should the brake issues go beyond a certain threshold the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration will issue a recall. 

When cars experience shuddering or pulsating, it is more than likely a warped rotor. This usually results from the brakes overheating, causing the metal to warp. Bent rotors can also produce the same result. Sometimes machining the rotor’s surface can cure the problem. 

But as rotors are not that expensive, and after all, they are part of the car’s brake system, it is better not to tempt fate. It is recommended to just replace them.
