In the wake of the 2022 New York Auto Show, GMC is looking to steal some thunder. Today it teased the next generation 2023 Canyon AT4X (and Chevy Colorado) showing the door side section and front wheel opening. The chiseled bodywork and sculpturing signal the general design direction for the long-awaited midsize GM truck.

What else is new for the 2023 GMC Canyon truck?

This image also includes the Canyon AT4X badging, along with the rocker protectors and bead-lock wheels. From previous leaks, we understand those wheels will be 17-inch alloy bead-lock-capable. The AT4X trim was first introduced this year on the 2022 GMC Sierra.

What other special features will come with the 2023 AT4X Canyon?

It is expected that the GMC will incorporate into this special Canyon truck features from the GMC Sierra AT4X and Silverado ZRR. That includes MultiMatic DSSV dampers, multiple skid plates, and rock rails. 33-inch tall off-road tires have already been spied on camouflaged test mules.

The new 2023 GMC Canyon is built on the revised GMT-31XX body-on-frame chassis, now coded 31XX-2. But everything else is new, from the exterior sheet metal and interior to the engine. The new truck will feature a 2.7-liter turbocharged L3B four-cylinder engine. 

When will the truck debut?

This is the same 310 hp engine as found in the Sierra 1500 with 348 lb-ft of torque. We don’t know whether GM will detune the engine for the Canyon so as not to compete with its full-size sibling. What we know is that the I4 will spin a 10-speed automatic transmission.

GM is also stabbing into all of its new vehicles the Global B electrical system, called VIP for Vehicle Intelligence Platform. This allows for over-the-air updates and the latest infotainment and safety technology. GM invested over $1 billion to completely update its Wentzville, Missouri, currently building the 2022 midsize trucks.

Along with its sibling the Chevy Colorado, all of this GM goodness will debut mid-summer.
