The tiny yet mighty Hyundai Kona got off to a pretty good start but always seemed a little underrated. It flew under the radar and struggled to break out against compact rivals like the Subaru Crosstrek and Jeep Renegade. But now the tables have turned, and the 2024 Hyundai Kona has massive upgrades to put it on the center of the map.

How big is the 2024 Hyundai Kona?

The 2024 Hyundai Kona is larger than before. It grew by 6.9 inches in length and also got a little wider. The wheelbase was extended by 2.4 inches. Plus, the rear hatch is now taller and wider to help make loading cargo more convenient and versatile.

Also, the rear cargo hold has increased from 13 to 17 cubic feet of space. This measurement applies when the second-row seats are up. The seats can fold flat, and the Kona provides a flat, spacious floor. The electric batteries don’t cut into passenger or cargo room.

Plus, the front seats have been slimmed down by 30% without sacrificing support or comfort. This adds even more legroom for passengers in the rear. According to Hyundai, the lack of space for passengers and cargo was one of the most significant issues with the outgoing model.

The 2024 Hyundai Kona EV features a frunk under the hood where the engine usually goes. This provides extra storage space for gear that can be placed out of sight. The gear shift was placed on the steering wheel to free up more center console space.

How much power does the 2024 Kona have?

The 2024 Hyundai Kona has placed a primary emphasis on electric power. It might be offered with two configurations. The standard model could use a 48.6-kWh battery pack to provide 133 hp and 197 miles of range.

Upgrading to the extended range model could provide a 64.8-kWh battery pack with 201 hp and a 250-mile range. But it could also crank out 215 hp and a 260-mile range. Also, a more potent electric model could replace the Kona N.

It has a more aerodynamic shape to reduce drag and regenerative brakes. Reportedly, the battery can charge from 10 to 80% in roughly 10 minutes with a DC fast charger.

The gas-powered engines are being carried over, starting with the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. Upgrade to the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine for 195 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.

With the Kona N, you get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 276 hp that can be temporarily boosted to 286 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque.

Is the 2024 Kona interior better?

Yes, the 2024 Hyundai Kona interior is much improved with higher quality materials for a more premium feeling. The elegant yet simple design combines breathable mesh upholstery with bio leather and plush suede.

The digital gauge cluster and infotainment system have been replaced by two 12.3-inch dual screens that span across the dash. Physical buttons remain for easy access, and it’s safe to expect ventilated seats, a 360-degree display, and a more robust wireless phone charging pad.

Red accent stitching draws the eye, while metal pedals and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters provide a sense of athletic elegance.

The exterior of the Kona EV features a single LED bar that spans the width of the grille. It’s known as the seamless horizon and has a similar red taillight design. The gas-powered models look more confident with beefy gray cladding.

We should learn more about the 2024 Kona as it becomes available by the end of 2023, but it’s off to a great start. It looks better, has improved interior quality, received enhanced tech, got more electric power, and offers more room.
