If you’ve ever driven an old Corvette or Mustang, it’s both a thrill and let down. Thrilling because it’s an iconic car from the glory days of American muscle, but a let down because those glory days don’t hold a candle to today’s modern feel, handling, and comfort. 

Sitting upright with the steering wheel in your chest, clunking over every crack or ripple in the pavement. Maybe overheating in traffic. Fading brakes and handling that feels like a hand-built scooter with metal roller skate wheels. What if you could buy an old Mustang that maintains its original look, but with all of today’s technology, power, and handling?

You can. There’s a company in Florida that builds first-gen Mustangs updated to drive and feel like cars of today. Revology CEO Tom Scarpello is a former Ford engineer that saw a market for updated Mustangs. It’s made 50 so far.

Ford and Shelby Licensed

The new/old Mustangs are licensed by Ford–the only company licensed to build a Ford replica. Revology also got a license from Shelby—you know, like in Shelby Mustang. It starts with a 1965-1968 Mustang chassis. To that, the team adds a 5.0 liter Ford Coyote V8. You can upgrade to a 600-hp Rousch supercharged V8 for upping horsepower many times the power of an original Mustang.

From there you can choose a six-speed Ford automatic or Tremec manual six-speed transmission; with modern steering, brakes, and suspension.

Coupe, Convertible, or 2+2

Coupe, convertible, or 2+2 fastback—you can have it anyway. Interestingly, all of the 1968 fastbacks Revology has made are painted the same Highland Green as seen on Steve McQueen’s Mustang in the movie Bullitt. The Mustangs carry a one-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, with a two-year Ford warranty on the drivetrain, and a five-year warranty on the body for rust and corrosion. 

More of the modern includes a backup camera, power windows that are actuated by what looks to be the old window cranks, power windows and locks, navigation, Bluetooth, and more. We told you it was like a new car!

If you want to deviate slightly, you can also get walnut or brushed aluminum interior trim, wool carpet, and Alcantara fabric. Every car is built to order, with about 40 skilled workers handling the modifications, fabrication, and assembly in the Orlando, Florida, factory.

Steady Sales Increase

The number of Mustangs cranked out by Revology keeps increasing with every year. Started in 2015, the team built eight cars each year in 2016 and 2017. In 2018 it built 20, and this year Revology says it’s on a pace to build even more.

Feel Like Steve McQueen

Besides custom building a 1965 or 1966 convertible, Revology can also build Mustang GT fastbacks, Shelby GT350 or GT500s, and as mentioned 1968 GT fastbacks. Those don’t have to be Highland Green, but why not feel like a modern-day McQueen while experiencing the exhilaration of driving a vintage Mustang that feels better than new, because it is?
