The reception for the Rivian R1T electric truck has been generally good. People are excited to see the new EV truck on the road, and Rivian seems to be trucking along just fine with production. But then one person caught the Rivian R1T doing some unauthorized off-roading in a parking lot near the brand’s Irvine, California, office this week.

According to the original post on the Rivian subreddit, a pre-production Rivian R1T truck was in the parking lot of the Irvine facility this week. The truck crashed into two vehicles in the parking lot after losing control. The poster, blonktime, said that the vehicle traveled about 50 feet before coming to a screeching halt. It took with it a Ford Explorer and damaged another car as it went through the bushes.

The R1T electric truck came to a stop after hitting a Mercedes-Benz S550. Based on the other photos presented, the electric truck went through the bushes and a shrub pretty quickly. There are significant tire marks leading to the shrub where the back end of the truck can be seen.

The cops were already on the scene when the images were taken, and there were no injuries—just an accident in a parking lot.

There’s nothing wrong with the Rivian R1T electric truck

Rivian responded to the article after Jalopnik picked it up and offered a comment. It seems the accident was just that, an accident.

“A Rivian-owned prototype vehicle was involved in an accident near our Irvine facility yesterday. The Rivian employee at the wheel was uninjured, and the accident’s cause was driver error. All safety features performed as intended.”

Just out of the frame of the photos is the Ford Explorer as mentioned above. The Rivian truck sent it scooting out of its chosen parking spot. On top of that, take a look at the tire marks in the photo above. The electric truck came to a stop quite a bit away from where the tire tracks lead. It was probably going pretty quick into the greenery before coming to a stop on the Mercedes. The original poster on Reddit noted a sharp turn nearby, and the Rivian might have taken the turn a bit too quickly.

What’s the good news here?

Many other brands have failed before getting a vehicle to production, like the Rivian R1T (looking at you, Lordstown Motors). The fact that the Rivian is out and about on the streets is a good thing. The R1T starts at $67,500 and has an EPA-estimated 314-mile range. The electric truck has an 11,000-pound towing capacity and a three-foot wading depth. Plus, it gets from 0-60 mph in three seconds.

The Rivian R1T is supposed to start getting delivered to buyers soon after a few delays. There’s another trim slated to launch at the start of 2022, but some early adopters might see the electric truck before that. Either way, it beat the Tesla Cybertruck, Hummer EV, and Ford Lightning to the market.

At this point, it seems like this accident was just an accident and isn’t a blemish on the Rivian brand. Thankfully all of the involved parties were OK and the Rivian R1T will live to drive another day.
