The Robert Downey Jr. Car Collection EVs Were Doomed To Leave His Garage
Robert Downey Jr. shocked eager fans at the San Diego Comic-Con by unveiling himself as an incipient Dr. Doom. However, the Iron Man and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) star is no stranger to shocking news. Downey Jr. announced that his electric vehicle (EV) classic car conversions were doomed to leave his collection– just after making the conversions on his Max original streaming show Downey’s Dream Cars.
Soon-to-be Dr. Doom Robert Downey Jr. gave away several EV classic cars shortly after the high-dollar EV conversions on ‘Downey’s Dream Cars
Robert Downey Jr. won the hearts of millions of movie-goers and comic book fans alike with his long-running tenure as the billionaire industrialist and extraordinary individual, Tony Stark. However, after a bombastic performance in Avengers: Endgame, the snarky superhero left the MCU in 2019.
Since then, Downey Jr. took the stage for the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, the undisputed cradle of comic book developments, and revealed his huge news. The once-superhero will return to the MCU as one of Marvel’s most infamous villains, Dr. Victor Von Doom.
However, beyond being the most influential MCU actor in the studio’s history, Robert Downey Jr. is also a car enthusiast. I mean, one glimpse at his collection reveals classic Mercedes-Benz sedans and drop-top Chevrolet Corvettes beyond the cutting-edge Audis fans are so accustomed to.
Still, after Downey Jr. became something of a crusader for climate-mindedness, he started a show to convert several of his stunning classic cars. Downey’s Dream Cars, a Max original streaming show, featured many of the superstar’s cars undergoing green car conversions, from full electrification to running on vegetable oil.
However, even after converting his 1969 Mercedes Benz 280 SE, 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, 1966 Buick Riviera, 1972 Volkswagen Bus, 1972 Chevrolet K-10, and 1985 Chevrolet El Camino to Earth-friendly standards, he didn’t keep them.
Ever the environmentalist, Robert Downey Jr.’s six classic cars headed to the New York International Auto Show. Attendees would then have the chance to enter a sweepstakes to win the cars.
Still, Downey Jr. sent the proceeds to the FootPrint Coalition. Moreover, the climate-focused non-profit focuses on furthering environmentalist technologies. Less Dr. Doom, more Tony Stark, I’d say.
