RV Alert: NHTSA Issues Recalls for Several Brands
Recreational vehicles are supposed to be for fun getaways. But, an RV can be more dangerous than necessary if something about its production is not built correctly or is prone to failure. So, just like cars, an RV can become the subject of a recall too. That is the case with the NHTSA recalls listed below for several manufacturers.
Jayco, Inc. – Potential units affected: 165
Certain models from Jayco are a part of this recall. 2021 Vision, Vision XL, Emblem, Alante, Precept, and Precept Prestige models are having trouble with their bedlift motors. An internal gear failure may cause the overhead bunk to no longer be secure.
“If the bed releases unexpectedly from the stowed position while moving, it could contact the driver and possibly block their vision, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.”
Owners of the affected Jayco units will be contacted. The bed motor will be replaced free of charge by dealers. Owners with questions may contact Jayco Customer Service at 1-617-776-0344. The reference number for this recall is 9903525. The safety action will begin November 13, 2020.
Keystone RV – Potential units affected: 1,278
2020-2021 Cougar trailers by Keystone are affected by the recall. Specifically, the trailers with the Off-The-Grid (OTG) Solar Package are of concern. The inverter may be wired incorrectly and may consequently attempt to energize the shore power connection.
Owners of the affected Keystone trailers will be notified. Dealers will test and rewire the inverter as needed, free of charge. Owners with questions or that want to schedule a service appointment may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. The reference number for this recall is 20-389. This safety action will begin December 18, 2020.
Thor Motor Coach – Potential units affected: 59
Use of the transfer switch may be a cause for fire. So, Thor Motor Coach (TMC) is recalling some older motorhomes.
“2010-2011 Four Winds Montecito 38D, 38E, 40J, 42B, 42C motorhomes, equipped with an Iota ITS-50R transfer switch. The transfer switch may experience a heat-related failure because it was exposed to high electrical loads when used in higher ambient temperatures.”
Thor will be reaching out to owners of the affected units. The Iota ITS-50R transfer switch will be replaced, free of charge. The company’s customer service is available at 1-877-855-2867 for questions. The reference number for this recall is RC000205. This safety action will begin in the new year, on January 3, 2021.
Winnebago Industries, Inc. – Potential affected units: 1,806
Proper seat belt anchorage is necessary in a collision. Winnebago, however, is recalling some recreational vehicles that can have a weld nut installed incorrectly on the shoulder belt. Some 2012-2021 Era 170X units are involved in this safety action.
Owners will be notified by Winnebago. A serrated flange nut will replace the previous nut. Dealers will carry out the recall without charge to the owner. If owners have questions, Customer Service for Winnebago is 1-800-798-2002. This safety action will begin December 21, 2020.
Traveling on vacation with an RV is supposed to be a refreshing experience. However, if a recall hasn’t been taken care of, then the experience could be very different. Please take action as necessary if you are affected by any of these NHTSA announced recalls.
