Many people put their recreational vehicles in storage at about this time of year due to the cooler weather. However, just because the RV might be out of sight does not mean that it should be forgotten. For example, the NHTSA has found some safety concerns that affect several RV manufacturers’ products. So, even if an RV has been tucked away for the season, it may be time to pay attention to it again in order to take care of a recall.

Daimler Vans USA: Power Steering Hose

The NHTSA has issued a recall for 2015-2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vans. Some of these vans have questionable power steering hose connections that can fail. The failure may cause the van to become harder to steer and increase the possibility of a crash or injury. This action affects 47,667 units.

“DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will check the return line connections of the power steering system, correcting it as needed, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this campaign is NV3LETULPE.”

Jayco: Improper engine cover insulation

The NHTSA says several Jayco model lines are affected by this recall. A total of 360 units are involved and will be fixed free of charge. According to the agency, the vehicles are,

“…certain 2020-2021 Alante, Precept, and Precept Prestige motorhomes and Entegra Vision, Vision XL motorhomes built on a Ford F-53 chassis. The engine covers may not contain sufficient heat insulation, causing the interior surface temperatures to be excessive.”

Jayco will reach out to the owners. However, concerned owners can call customer service at 1-800-283-8267. The reference for the action is 9903527. The recall will begin on December 18, 2020.

Keystone RV: Frame may fail

Well, this recall is pretty eye-opening. The frames of certain Keystone RV units may buckle and fail. According to the NHTSA, 1,296 units are affected. The agency’s statement says,

“Keystone is recalling certain 2019-2021 Outback 335CG and 340BH recreational trailers. A section of the frame rail may have inadequate support where the draw-bar is attached, allowing the frame rail to buckle.”

Keystone owners will be notified, and reinforcements will be made to the frame, at no charge. Owners may also contact customer service at 1-866-425-4369 to schedule the repair. The recall reference number is 20-391. This action will begin on January 15, 2021.

Recall actions are disappointing for consumers and manufacturers alike. Trust of the specific RV may erode. But, recalls are none-the-less necessary to keep people safe, or at least to inform them of known safety hazards. So, regardless if an RV is in storage or not this time year, it is best to address any safety concerns now. Doing so will enable a fuller enjoyment of the camping experience down the road, an experience without nasty surprises.
