There are two things that don’t usually come to mind when you think of Jeep. These things are large SUVs and safety. The Jeep Wrangler has a huge reputation for flipping, but things are changing. The massive Jeep Wagoneer is actually one of the safest large SUVs.

According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer is one of the safest large SUVs available.

It earned a Top Safety Pick Award, which is one award below the top honor of Top Safety Pick+. Like other large SUVs in the class, it fails to provide good protection for rear passengers.

While the Wagoneer snagged this title, the 2024 Ford Expedition and 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe came up short. Both of these SUVs need improvements in the small overlap front crash test.

More than 90% of new vehicles have easily sailed through this test with Good ratings, though. Good is the highest score possible.

The Wagoneer earned a good score because it maintained survival space for the driver and front passenger during the small overlap test.

But during the driver-side test there was a slight intrusion in the footwell, providing a moderate risk of injury to the driver; ‘s left foot and ankle.

During the passenger and driver-side test, the front and side curtain airbags prevented the heads of crash dummies from striking rigid structures.

The Chevy Tahoe received an Acceptable score for maintaining adequate survival space. But there was a substantial risk of lower leg injuries.

There was a high risk of injury to the right foot and a moderate risk of injury to the passenger’s left leg during the passenger-side test.

The Ford Expedition received a Marginal score and didn’t perform well on either side. During the driver’s side test, the steering column was partially detached from the instrument panel.

During both tests, the A-pillar separated from the rocker panel and footwell intrusions threatened the safety of the feet and legs. However, it has Good ratings in plenty of other areas.

The Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition could receive significant updates in 2025. They could replace the Wagoneer as a safer large SUV next year.
