Most luxury cars are beyond the budget of many car buyers, but this isn’t always the case. Take the Genesis G80, for example. It may have lost the J.D. Power APEAL No. 1 ranking to the Porsche Taycan, but it was very close. The Genesis G80 price is also cheap enough to make it a worthy competitor to the Porsche Taycan.

There were several winners in the latest APEAL study from J.D. Power, and the Porsche Taycan and Genesis G80 were part of this group. However, only one vehicle can take first place, and the Taycan beat out the G80 for the highest-ranked upper midsize premium car.

While it’s always recommended to look at what the researchers and critics have to say about a vehicle, this doesn’t mean you have to abide by what they recommend or the awards they give out. When you take a closer look at the specs of these two vehicles, you’ll see that the Genesis G80 may not have received the top rank, but it’s still an incredible vehicle that car buyers should consider. When you factor in the Genesis G80’s price, that makes it even more attractive.

How does the Genesis G80 compare to the Porsche Taycan

The 2024 Genesis G80 has a powerful 2.5-liter Inline-four base engine, which offers 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. The higher trim has a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which makes 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel is a standard feature, as well as an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The fuel mileage ratings are 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. It has impressive speed, as well. In 5.7 seconds, the 2024 Genesis G80 can hit 60 mph. It takes 14.1 seconds to reach 100 mph. For the upper trim, these times are 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and 100 mph in 11.5 seconds.

The Genesis G80’s price means that the interior is very luxe, with leatherette seating and wrapped upper instrument panel, piano black gloss trim, heated front and rear seats, and more. 

The Genesis G80 has also packed on the safety features. There is forward collision-avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot detection, rear-cross traffic, parking distance warning, high beam assist, rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, and safe exit assist. There is also a 14.5-inch infotainment display size, 12 total speakers, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a USB connection, and Satellite radio.

In comparison, the 2024 Porsche Taycan has an electric motor that can produce 402 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque. It has rear-wheel drive and two-speed automatic transmission.  The base trim can reach 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

The fuel mileage is where it really stands out. Thanks to being electric, the 2024 Porsche Taycan gets 76 MPGe city, 84 MPGe highway, and 79 MPGe combined. It gets a 208-mile electric range, which is kind of sad for a luxury electric vehicle. Higher trims offer up to 233 miles, which is still not enough to justify the price.

It also has several safety features like adaptive cruise control, active lane keeping, lane change assist, night vision assist, surround view, and active parking assist. For the interior, there is OLEA club leather, partial leather, or Race-Tex microfiber. A 16.8-inch curved instrument cluster screen and an 8.4-inch center console help eliminate physical buttons.

The 2024 Genesis G80’s price is cheaper, but it’s a worthy choice

The 2024 Genesis G80’s price starts at $54,150 for the base trim and $64,000 for the upper trim. That’s still rather high, but for a midsize luxury car, this is cheap.

The 2024 Porsche Taycan starts at $90,900. This is $35,850 more than the base trim of the Genesis G80 price. The Taycan tops out at $197,500, which is $133,500 more than the G80’s highest price.

Given all this, for anyone who wants a luxury car without having to pay a massive amount, the Genesis G80 is the obvious pick.
