See the First Image of the Delorean EV (EVolution)
The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) may have been short-lived, but it produced one of the world’s most recognizable sports cars: the DMC-12. The stainless steel, gullwing Delorean remains a pop culture icon. Now, DeLorean rides again with an all-new EV.
What is DeLorean?
DeLorean was a bespoke company that founder John DeLorean named after himself in 1975. It built the iconic, stainless-steel DMC-12 made famous in the movie Back to the Future. But the company went bankrupt in 1982.
Then in 1995, a mechanic named Stephen Wynne founded a new DMC in Texas. This company purchased the original logo and parts inventory. It has stayed afloat restoring classic DMC-12 cars and selling merchandise. You can get a DeLorean hoodie or replacement chrome. But Wynne’s company is stepping up and building its first car.
The all-new DeLorean EV
DeLorean’s comeback is based upon an all-new sportscar: an electric vehicle. From DMC’s teaser video we know it is going to be a long low sports car–just like the DMC-12 but much curvier. Gone is that metallic flying-wedge design.

We also know that the DeLorean EV will share the gullwing doors that made the DMC-12 so recognizable. This is one of the things people remember from the original, and is one design cue the company is smart to keep.
Even more exciting, we have a name for the electric DeLorean. The company has dubbed it the EVolve. Is it an acronym or just a clever play on words? We’ll have to wait to find out.
When will the DeLorean EVolve come out?
On April 4th, the DeLorean Motor Company released the first image of its “next generation” DeLorean car. It also gave us a release date.
From DeLorean’s teaser image, we know that the new electric sports car will offer at least one silver paint option. This is reminiscent of the DMC-12’s stainless steel finish. Another throwback to the DMC-12 will be the DeLorean EV’s rear window louvers.
Finally, we know when DMC will release the DeLorean EV: August 18th, 2022. This makes sense because DeLorean is scheduling events all through the Pebbles Beach Concours D’Elegance the Week of August 21st-28th.
Originally, DeLorean shared an August 21st release date. This was because it planned to unveil its retro-futuristic sports car on the Councours d’Elegance concept car lawn. So the new August 18th date means the DeLorean EVolution gets its very own event.

So mark your calenders: August 18th, 2022 we get our first glimpse of the DeLorean EV, then we get some in-depth info all through the next week.
The EV startup space is already crowded. But the DeLorean is an iconic brand with lots of niche cultural appeal. If the EVolve can keep up with the competition, it may be a major player in the EV market.
