See the Spy Shots of the All-New 2024 Mustang
The sportscar world is changing–and electrifying–rapidly. But the Ford Mustang has been a standby since 1964 and it’s not going anywhere soon. Spy shots of the next-gen, 2024 Mustang are already rolling in. Some aspects of the car are changing, but the classic Mustang’s basic package remains very much the same.
The seventh generation of the Ford Mustang is coming
My colleague Allison Barfield wrote that the next-generation Ford Mustang is on its way. We know it’s also named the S650. It will be a 2024 model, so we’ll likely see a lot more of it going into 2023.
One question everyone has is, “What engine will the new Mustang have?” Rumors, often contradicting one another, have been swirling.
Some have wondered if Ford will toss the 5.0-liter V8 in favor of the current 2.3-liter EcoBoost I4 and another, larger EcoBoost V6. Others have speculated about the F-150’s hybrid PowerBoost finding a second home in the Mustang.
A contradictory rumor revolves around the new 6.8-liter “Godzilla” V8 finding a home in some high-performance Mustang.
From the current generation F-150, it’s obvious that Ford is happy to offer multiple powerplants for multiple demographics. The F-150’s premium PowerBoost engine makes similar power to the 5.0-liter V8 and the Blue Oval sells its F-150 with both.
The 2024 Mustang convertible
According to Car and Driver, the above spy shots are of a next-generation Mustang convertible. Its track-ready wheels and brakes signal a high-performance package. That said, the photographer reports it does not sound like a V8.
Instead, this high-performance Mustang is likely sporting Ford’s four-cylinder EcoBoost. Does this mean it gets some extra giddy-up from Ford’s PowerBoost hybrid system? Or is this a regular I4 EcoBoost, turned all the way up? We’ll have to wait and see.
Does this signal the end of the V8 Mustang? Not so fast, Car and Driver reports that Ford’s vehicle program director, Ali Jammoul confirmed the next-gen Mustang will have a V8 and manual transmission, at first.
But Jammoul also admitted that Ford is “definitely looking at” a Mustang EV eventually.
The all-new 2024 Mustang coupe
This high-performance Mustang convertible is not the only next-generation 2024 Mustang that’s been spotted. At least one coupe test mule is also been making the rounds.
One standout change includes even thinner headlights upfront, possibly because of LED bulbs. Another change is a redesign of the current Mustang’s iconic three-layer taillights.
Another large change for 2024 is a dual-tip exhaust. The current V8-powered Mustang GT comes with a quad-tip exhaust system. Again, is this the EcoBoost four-cylinder? Is it a hybrid? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
Overall, it keeps its muscle car long-hood design. It also has a classic sloping fastback. But otherwise, this Mustang looks quite different. The grille appears to be longer, and the car appears shorter. Although that may be the lack of overhang.
