Kicking off the festivities for SEMA 2021, car enthusiasts Jay Leno and Keith Urban revealed a fully-restored 1969 Ford Mustang at the Ford press conference earlier today. Urban told the crowd at the new products breakfast that his wife, Nicole Kidman, handed him the keys to the Mustang many years ago. In proper car enthusiast form, it then sat around for a few years waiting for restoration.

The 1969 Ford Mustang was a gift but spent more time in storage than it did on the road. It was an anniversary gift for the couple’s second year anniversary, “I’ve never seen a bow on a car before,” Urban told the crowd. It was featured in a music video before heading off to restoration, which never actually happened. Upon meeting Jay Leno, Urban handed the keys over to the Ford team.

The Ford Mustang was a bit of a monstrosity at first, being held together by “vice grips” at one point. Upon seeing the car, the group knew they had their work cut out for them. After waiting so long to drive it, what was another year or so to get the 1969 Ford Mustang in tip-top shape?

Urban said that the color was black upon purchasing it, but the paint was in bad shape. As you can see in the photos, the blue color chosen changes color in the light. Urban said he Googled the “darkest blue color” he could find, which brought him to the Mariana Trench. Depending on where you look at it, the color shifts from blue to purple and black.

This Ford Mustang is equipped with a 5.0L mustang motor, ROUSH supercharger, and long-tube headers racking up an impressive 700 hp. It comes mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The group upgraded the body panels, brakes, and added some special rims. Urban wanted to keep the look of the Ford Mustang but the grille is 3D printed from the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Not a bad upgrade.

Plus, the group at Ford, SEMA, and Mr. Jay Leno himself gifted Urban a matching guitar from Fender.

Before the restoration, Ubran featured the 1969 Ford Mustang in his “Sweet Thing” music video. If you ask us, it still looks pretty good in the music video. But who doesn’t want a car restored by the professionals at Ford? Perhaps we will see the fully-restored version in a music video next year.
