TRD took to SEMA 2021 to reveal its 2022 Toyota Tundra Desert Chase off-road pickup truck. The Toyota Racing Development team took a brand new third-generation Tundra TRD Pro and transformed it into a chase truck. Chase trucks are ones that support vehicles that race in desert settings, carrying tools and parts to assist. Capability is massive in these types of trucks, and the Desert Chase is just that.

What cool features does the Toyota Tundra Desert Chase have?

A chase truck needs to be able to both carry a bunch of weight and travel long distances through the desert. So what has TRD done to this truck to make it so capable? A TRD long-travel suspension makes it wider and capable of taking hard hits. A wide-body kit allows the suspension and makes the Tundra look bigger and bulkier. It has 18-inch aluminum Method wheels wrapped in 37-inch General Grabber X3 tires.

The Desert Chase Tundra TRD Pro is equipped with a roll bar housing some equipment. A light bar, an off-road jack, a CO2 bottle, fuel and water containers, two spare tires, and an ARB Tred Pro Recovery Board are each on-board. The truck has Rigid Lighting throughout to make sure it can keep going into the desert night.

Custom TRD-developed bumpers book-end the truck to increase protection as well as the approach angle. The all-new i-Force Max powertrain has a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, nickel-metal hydride battery, and an electric motor capable of producing 437 when working together.

White seems boring, why did TRD choose that color?

The Desert Chase Tundra’s bright white paint isn’t there by accident. It actually has a number of different functionalities for desert driving. Firstly, it keeps the truck cool in the hot sun. Drivers don’t need the truck getting any hotter than it already will be due to black paint.

Next, it hides the dirt that will inevitably cover the vehicle. It’s quite hard to see dirt and desert sand on white paint, as opposed to a color that would make it stand out. Ironically, its other purpose is to make it stand out. The white truck can be easily spotted while it’s driving or parked out in the desert in case of an emergency situation.

Can you purchase a Desert Chase Toyota Tundra TRD Pro?

You won’t be able to purchase this exact Desert Chase design from the TRD team. The SEMA convention is meant to show off the many accessories and designs the in-house teams can come up with for their respective vehicles. Toyota has done an excellent job with a few different trucks for SEMA 2021.

Though the vehicle is not available for purchase, you could technically put one together on your own. With enough money and capability, the parts used for building it can be added to a Tundra TRD Pro. It might be a good idea if you plan on driving around the desert any time soon.

The Desert Chase is just one of the amazing rigs the automaker put together. Others include a “Tacozilla” Tacoma camper, a Tacoma Overlanding concept, and more. The 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Desert Chase is available for your viewing pleasure at Toyota’s 2021 SEMA show exhibit booth in Central Hall.
