Do you know what really doesn’t sound good for the 2022 Toyota Tundra? Separating axles. Imagine driving your brand new truck and dealing with your axles coming apart. This could lead to stability issues and compromised brakes. 

According to AutoBlog, about 46,176 new Toyota Tundra models are under recall to address this issue. Some models may have been shipped out with loose flange nuts and need an inspection. 

Both the gas-powered and hybrid models are at risk. The trucks are fitted with a rear axle assembly, including an axle housing, axle-shaft sub-assemblies, and a differential carrier assembly. 

Then each axle shaft sub-assembly is secured to the axle housing with studs and flange nuts. The nuts may loosen over time. 

Also, Toyota is unable to determine which trucks need to be evaluated on an individual basis. Every truck manufactured between November 2, 2021, to June 13, 2022, needs to be evaluated. 

You may notice that your Tundra is at risk if you notice an unusual vibration, new strange noises, and oil leaking from the differential. 

How severe is this 2022 Tundra problem? 

This 2022 Toyota Tundra issue is still under investigation. Hopefully, the problem is simple, and it’s only related to a few loose nuts. However, we will keep an eye on this problem to see if it develops into something much worse. 

Toyota will start notifying owners of affected trucks by July 15. If your Tundra is at risk, you will need to visit a local dealership for service. You don’t need to return to the same place where you purchased your truck. Any dealership should be fine. 

Your truck will be inspected, and the nuts will be tightened. Also, if there is any axle-related damage, then the broken components will be replaced. 

Another Toyota Tundra recall was issued due to faulty rearview camera systems. Some models with the panoramic camera and paring assist software prevented the rearview camera from displaying an image. This issue was corrected with a simple software update. 

How reliable is the new Toyota Tundra? 

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has an average predicted reliability rating from Consumer Reports, which isn’t bad. It used to have a much higher rating, but the ratings dropped because the 2022 Tundra is a new model. 

There hasn’t been much time to test the new models yet. In time, we could see that the Tundra is still an incredibly durable and reliable option. But the truck could also face new problems as drivers rack up more miles on the pavement. 

It’s not uncommon for new vehicles to have a few recalls during their first year on the streets. For example, the new Ford Bronco had three recalls to address during 2021. 

We wouldn’t be worried about the new Tundra yet. But if you have a 2022 model, don’t hesitate to get your nuts checked. Ignoring this problem could lead to more damage and increase the risk of accidents.
