Rumors surrounding the Chevy Camaro and its possible new design elements — such as an electric powertrain — are drumming up more interest and sales. Though these rumors haven’t been confirmed or denied, we know one thing for sure: The Shock and Steel Special Edition package will return for another year. 

GM Authority reports that the 2022 Chevy Camaro will sport the same special edition package as the 2021 model. So, what does the added package offer?

The Chevy Camaro’s popularity is still hanging on

Thanks to the chip shortage, Chevrolet has set aside producing some Camaro models to build better-selling vehicles in General Motors’ lineup. Unfortunately, the Camaro hasn’t seen the sales that some of its sister vehicles are experiencing. 

In 2020, the Chevy Camaro saw just shy of 30,000 vehicles sold worldwide. This year doesn’t look much better, because considering the sales it’s seeing so far, experts project the popular sports car will probably sell only about 20,000 units or fewer. 

Though you might think the low sales would prompt Chevrolet to kill the Camaro, the automaker thinks differently. It still plans to continue producing its iconic muscle car until at least 2024. Because it’s still an award-winning vehicle, though, the automaker might be right in doing so. J.D. Power believes the 2021 model is the most dependable vehicle sports car. This goes back as far as the 2018 model, too. 

And with that, the Chevy Camaro’s Shock and Steel Special Edtion will return for the 2022 model year.

What to expect with the 2022 Chevy Camaro’s Shock and Steel Special Edition

One of the packages Chevy added for the Camaro is the Shock and Steel Special Edition. It’s returning for the second consecutive year, Muscle Cars and Trucks reports. It’s available for coupe and convertible body styles on three trim levels: the 2LT, 3LT, and 2SS. What can you expect to pay for it? It will add $3,495 to the purchase price. 

The Shock and Steel Special Edition includes quite a few options. What makes it fun is that it will look slightly different depending upon the exterior paint color you choose. On the 2021 model, if your body color is Shock, you will get a silver center stripe. If you go with the Satin, you get a Shock-colored stripe instead. For the 2022 model, the colors will expand to Black, Satin Steel Metallic, and Summit White. A Rapid Blue will also be available. 

Both paint color choices come with 20-inch aluminum wheels, carbon flash-painted exterior mirrors, a black fuel-filler door with a carbon fiber insert, a body-colored winged spoiler, yellow-painted Brembo calipers, and more. On the inside, you’ll find black-suede pads for the knee, a carbon-fiber instrument frame, and premium carpeted flooring.

How well does this muscle car perform?

The 2021 model has four engine options. Standard on the LS and LT models is the 2.0-liter turbo motor, which generates 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough power to pull 0-60 acceleration times of 5.4 to 5.5 seconds, Chevrolet reports. A 3.6-liter V6 engine is available for the LT trim. 

Standard on the LT1 and the SS is a 6.2-liter V8, whose 0-60 acceleration time is about 4.0 to 4.3 seconds. But the most powerful option in the lineup comes in the ZL1 model. It sports a standard 6.2-liter LT4 V8 supercharged engine harnessing 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. 

Pricing is relatively affordable. The LS starts at $25,000, and the LT starts at just $500 more. But the top-trim ZL1 slides in at $63,000 to start. Available packages can raise the price significantly, depending on what you choose. But for what you get, they may be worth it.
