Volvo has long had a reputation for safe, quality vehicles. The Volvo XC90 is certainly no exception. If you’re looking for a new or used SUV with an emphasis on comfort and safety, look no further than the XC90.

The Seal of Awesome

According to consumer site Car Complaints, the 2009 Volvo XC90 has no complaints. According to the site, Volvo has earned its reputation for safety with vehicles like the XC90. They describe driving the SUV is like driving a comfortable, dependable tank. They really like the standard roll stability control. The feature reduces torque and deploys the brakes to greatly minimize any chance of a rollover.

The 2009 XC90 has an excellent safety score, in part thanks to a slew of safety features and incredibly comfy front- and second-row seating. The third row of seats is tiny, and the model doesn’t get the best fuel economy. Still, it offers a smooth ride and front and rear side curtain airbags.

It was enough to receive the coveted Seal of Awesome from Car Complaints. The site defines the seal as being awarded to vehicles with “no apparent defects, serious or otherwise.” To date, it’s had no consumer complaints submitted to the site against it.

The 2009 Volvo XC90

According to U.S. News, the 2009 Volvo XC90 wasn’t exactly at the top of its class. Other midsize luxury SUVs in the class at the time often had interiors that were better and offered better tech features. Its peers had better fuel economy and some even outperformed the XC90.

At the time, some reviewers recommended looking elsewhere for a luxury SUV.

Even so, it has to be said that the 2009 Volvo XC90 is well-made and comfortable as long as you’re not in the third row. The fact that the SUV seats five to seven and is rated as incredibly safe will appeal to families. The 3.2 trim seats five and has cloth upholstery, wood trim inside, and dual-zone automatic climate control. There are power child safety locks on the back doors, 18-inch alloy wheels, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory settings.

The V8 trim seats up to seven technically, but that added third row is a little short on space. The V8 offers restyled 18-inch wheels along with a sunroof, leather upholstery, and a self-leveling rear suspension. The front passenger seat is powered, there’s a built-in child booster seat in the second row of seats and a separate air conditioner for the back. You also get a six-CD changer and better instrumentation.

The 2020 Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is still around for 2020 as a stylish SUV that still offers solid safety. 

The 2016 model was the first in Volvo’s design revival, and now in 2020, the Volvo XC90 is one of the most visually appealing luxury SUVs available. It offers a choice of three four-cylinder engines including a plug-in hybrid. You can also get the XC90 in either a six- or seven-passenger layout.

The cabin is a gorgeous study in Scandinavian design. It uses quality materials like Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, and chrome accents for an elegant touch. The touchscreen of the infotainment system controls most of the SUVs systems. A 12.3-inch screen oriented toward the driver is the digital gauge panel.

And the safety Volvo is known for? Still there with a wealth of driver-assist features that are standard across the lineup. The latest XC90 received a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2019. It also earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
