Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular as auto manufacturers figure out how EVs will fit into their catalogs. One thing that might be holding back more EV buyers might be a perceived lack of utility. But that is changing quickly. It’s no secret how popular trucks are in the United States, and brands like Ford are starting to make electric trucks. There have even been newcomers to the market such as Rivian. So, is now the time to buy an EV truck, or should you wait?

Is there an electric truck I can buy now?

The short answer to the question is yes, there are currently electric pickups that you can buy. But, do not expect to pay sticker price. On sites like Cars & Bids, you will find EV trucks from Rivian, Ford, and even GMC, however, they aren’t cheap.

Folks are paying huge premiums to get the benefits of an electric truck. And, because these vehicles are in short supply, prices are quite high. Until that fact is remedied, you really are not going to find an electric pickup that feels like a good value. 

Want an EV truck? You should wait

If you are interested in buying an electric truck and you do not want to pay a premium, the best answer is to wait. As supply chain issues are sorted out, dealership inventories should return to normal. Meaning that you can go to a dealership to buy the vehicle that you want. And that certainly is not the case right now. 

Plus, according to Kelley Blue Book, there are more EV trucks on the way. Because of that, you will have the power of choice as you search for an electrified pickup. Brands such as VW, Ram, and Chevy all have intentions to offer EV trucks. But, they aren’t out yet. So unless you are set on a Ford F-150 Lightning or Rivian R1T, waiting will provide you with more options.

Are electric trucks practical?

While EV trucks may not have the same towing utility as a full-size truck with a V8, they are still fairly practical. Especially as charging infrastructures are improved so you don’t face the hassles of finding a charging port that works. Ranges of electric vehicles have been improved, but if you are doing truck stuff you will likely have to deal with a reduction in how far you can drive. 

Established brands such as Tesla are hoping to get EV trucks out on the road, and some new brands like Lordstown are aiming to do the same. But, there have been some holdups for some of these manufacturers. 

It’s not just these smaller companies that are struggling. Ford has placed a pause on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning models due to the high demand. So, if you want to buy one right now, you likely have to look to the second-hand market. And that is where you will see what kind of premiums these EV trucks are getting. Still, as time goes on, hopefully, more truck buyers come around to electric powertrains.
