With the arrival of the third-generation Nissan Frontier, some buyers may be looking at older versions of this mid-size truck. For nearly 20 years, the Frontier was a pickup that went without any major updates, which is pretty insane when compared to what other manufacturers have done. At the same time, there is something to be said about a truck that does not fight its old-school roots. Not every old Nissan Frontier is created equally though, and there are some models that are just better to avoid.

What were the worst years for the Nissan Frontier?

Some years of the Frontier were not all that reliable, and that includes the 2005, 2006, and 2007 model years. 2005 marked the second generation of the Nissan Frontier, but apparently, the truck had one serious flaw. According to CarComplaints.com, a coolant leak could occur which would ruin the transmission.

Now, this did not happen to every Frontier model, but it happened enough to make a notable impact on reliability ratings. So, it is probably best to just avoid Frontier models from these years. Especially if you want a truck that you can rely on for the many miles ahead.

Which Nissan Frontier’s are safe to buy?

Outside of 2005, 2006, and 2007 models, the Nissan Frontier should be a relatively safe truck to buy used. But, keep in mind that each pre-owned truck has a unique history behind it. You will want to do things like check service records before purchasing a truck, that way you know if what you are getting will truly be reliable.

The Frontier has long been a mid-size truck that is available in a variety of configurations. These include pickups with V6 engines, four-wheel drive, and even manual transmissions. Because of this, when you shop for a used Frontier, you will likely be able to get the proper amount of truck for your specific needs.

Is the new Nissan Frontier reliable?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier marks the third generation of this truck, and so far its predicted reliability appears fairly solid. The new Frontier comes with a standard V6 engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, it has the ability to tow up to 6,720 lbs. Which should be enough to handle most needs.

For those in search of an off-road truck, the 2022 Frontier still offers the PRO-4X trim. This package delivers Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and a locking rear differential. And that means the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is a pickup truck that is truly ready to tackle the road less traveled.

Should you buy a used Nissan truck?

So long as you avoid the 2005, 2006, and 2007 models years of the Frontier, this mid-size truck is likely to be a good used purchase. It is worth noting that used truck prices are still fairly expensive due to supply chain issues, so you may pay more now for a used mid-size truck than you would have in the past.

But as those issues are relieved, the prices of used vehicles should even out. Allowing you to find an affordable pickup that is worth buying.
