Can you daily drive a Honda Civic Type R?

If you’re thinking about swapping your daily driver out for the redesigned 2023 Type R, you’re in luck. There is nothing stopping you from driving a new Honda Civic Type R on a daily basis. In fact, it might be more practical than driving a Ford Mustang or Subaru BRZ every day. Those cars are pretty different, but they have a similar core element: performance cars you can drive every day. 

The new 11th generation car will also have a suite of driver aids and modern active safety features. While it is unlikely to offer all-wheel drive (AWD) or automatic transmission, it won’t be undrivable on wet surfaces. A good set of tires can make it more sure-footed in inclement weather. 

Can you daily drive an older Honda hot hatch?

The previous Honda Civic Type R, the 10th generation vehicle, is a hatchback, making it much more spacious than most sports cars. For instance, the 2022 Ford Mustang has a trunk volume of 14 cubic feet, nearly as little as a 2014 Ford Focus. However, the 10th generation Type R has 26 cubic feet of hatchback goodness, making it far more practical for grocery store runs. Does the Civic Type R have good gas mileage?

The 2021 Type R has an estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg at highway speeds. However, Car and Driver managed to squeeze 29 mpg out of the Type R’s highway cruiser credentials. That’s commendable, considering the performance of the Honda hot hatch. Since the 2023 Type R will get a variant of the outgoing FK8’s powerplant, it’s likely that the fuel economy will be similar. 

Is the Type R too powerful?

The upcoming 11th generation Type R will be the most powerful one yet, but not too powerful to daily drive. Considering that many consumers drive 485-horsepower Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Packs and Chevrolet Corvettes daily, the Type R’s power figures are more than manageable. 

What else could you daily drive?

You still have options if you want a practical hatchback but not the 2023 Honda Civic Type R specifically. For instance, you could buy a Volkswagen Golf R, which will get 30 mpg highway and hit sixty in just 3.9 seconds. Also, considering it’s a hot hatch like the Type R, it boasts practical volume and seating for friends.
