According to Silodrome, any self-respecting car nerd will tell you that calling this Ferrari a “Daytona” is a bit of a misnomer. This vintage Ferrari is technically a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4. After it was introduced in 1968, the 365 GTB/4 was given the Daytona name because it got a 1-2-3 finish in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967.
Supposedly, old man Ferrari himself was into using the nickname for 365 GTB/4, and as a result, Ferrari as a whole rarely uses the Daytona name in reference to the car. However, colloquially, the name has stuck, and plenty of people use it these days.
The Ferrari “Daytona” 365 GTB/4 is a special car
During the mid-to-late ‘60s, Enzo Ferrari fostered a great many rivalries. We are all aware of the Ford Vs. Ferrari after the film, but Ferrari was also beefing with Ferruccio Lamborghini. The long and the short of it is that in 1966, the Lamborghini Miura dropped and shocked the world. It was low, sleek, beautiful, and faster than greased lightning.
Not to be outdone, Ferrari sent the team to work to build something better than the Miura. A mid-engined V12 powered the little Bull. Ferrari famously wasn’t into the mid-engine placement, so the 1968 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 came with a front-mounted 4.4-liter Colombo V12 producing 347 hp and capable of 174 mph – exactly 3 mph faster than the Miura.

According to Silodrome, Elton John either took ownership of this 1972 Ferrari in 1972 or 1973. 1973 might make the most sense on account of that being Elton John’s breakthrough year. He released Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which were both hit records in 1973.
Elton John’s Ferrari 365GTB/4 is a right-hand-drive version of which Ferrari only ever made 158 examples. This particular Ferrari is not only Elton John’s and a super-rare English spec, but it is also in what is arguably the best configuration – Rosso Chiro with a Nero interior.
Aside from the Elton John authentication, Ferrari also recently added this car to its “red Book” status. This means Ferrari experts have thoroughly inspected this vintage Ferrari Daytona to verify its originality.
How much is Elton John’s vintage Ferrari Daytona worth?
Sir Elton John’s vintage 1972 Ferrari Daytona 365GTB/4 Will roll across the Silverstone Auction block on June 5th of this year. The projected value is said to be between $620,000-$700,000.
If recent car auctions have shown us anything, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the vintage Ferrari go for even more money.
