Look At What This Sneaker Designer Did To A Porsche Taycan
A sneaker designer just did this to a Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo. Known as an “internet influencer,” Wotherspoon wanted to turn a Taycan into an “art car.” Sneakers made from corduroy is another thing associated with him. Corduroy is a certain type of fabric that floats in and out of fashion from year to year. Wotherspoon decided that if it’s good enough for sneakers, it would be fabulous for the interior of a Porsche Taycan.
Why did they use corduroy in the Porsche Taycan project?
So guess what? One of the main features of this car is the use of corduroy, along with cork. His veganism drove some of his choices. No cow hides for Sean. Porsche Design Studio sanctioned this project. So some of that extra dough you pay for your Porsche goes into projects like this.
What compelled Wortherspoon to do this car? According to Style Porsche’s Volker Müller, “Inspired by a visit to the Porsche Museum, Sean got the idea for circular elements on the doors. His idea echoes the starting-number roundels on historic racing cars. At the same time, this inverted color breaks up the large area.”
Where did the Taycan colors come from?
Wotherspoon chose the colors he wanted to use. To evaluate his ideas, Porsche made scale models. The colors he ended up wanting, he gave names to. They are Nash Blue, Sean Peach, Loretta Purple, and Ashley Green. Supposedly, the names came from family members.
Because of the corduroy connection, Wotherspoon wanted it plastered throughout the Taycan’s interior. So the headliner, centers of the seats, and sun visors received the Atacama Beige material. The 2020 911 Targa 4S Heritage Edition also used the same fabric. In fact, going back to 1952, the 356 models sported corduroy. As we said, it floats in and out of use.
Where’s the wood?
The other prominent material used in the Taycan is cork. “Working with cork, however, presented a number of challenges to our trimmers,” says Müller. Sourced as a laminate, cork found its way onto the steering wheel, dashboard, A-pillars, and as trim. Even the floor mats are made from the stuff.
Once the interior was the way he wanted it, Wotherspoon desired to see similar colors used on the Taycan’s exterior. While reminiscent of VW’s Harlequin Golfs, there is a graphic breakup of sorts running along the doors.
Porsche says it likes doing art cars like the Taycan
“From Janis Joplin’s psychedelic 356 in the 1960s to the 911 RSR from 2019 designed by Richard Philips — the list of iconic art cars from Porsche is already long,” says Chief Marketing Officer Robert Adler. “Art cars suit Porsche very well. Creative design work with artists inspires us and motivates us to keep developing the brand, without changing it fundamentally.’
