Something Massive Is Missing From the 2024 Nissan Rogue
Most SUVs have started going green with hybrid and PHEV powertrain options. However, the Nissan Rogue is falling behind with one traditional internal combustion engine. Where is the Nissan Rogue Hybrid already?
Is there a Nissan Rogue Hybrid?
Currently, a Nissan Rogue Hybrid model doesn’t exist. But there is a Honda CR-V Hybrid, a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, a Ford Escape Hybrid, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEV. Why is the Rogue slow to adopt an electric boost?
The sole engine option with the Rogue is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with 201 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 30 mpg in the city and up to 37 mpg on the highway, which is actually pretty good.
I’m testing a 2024 Rogue at the moment, and it says the highest mpg it’s achieved is 40.1 mpg in Eco Mode. I haven’t used this mode yet, so another journalist got those results. My thoughts and final figures will be available next week.
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to generate 219 hp. It gets an EPA-estimated 41 mpg in the city and up to 38 mpg on the highway.
With the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid, you get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with two electric motors to provide 204 hp. It gets an EPA-estimated 43 mpg in the city and up to 36 mpg on the highway.
So while the Rogue holds its own on the highway against hybrid SUV rivals, it falls short in the city. But using Eco mode instead of the tantalizing Sport mode might help save some fuel.
The Nissan Rogue Hybrid was discontinued in 2020 due to a lack of interest. But rumors suggested that a new hybrid engine would return in 2024.
While the Rogue did gain a mid-cycle refresh in 2024 for a modern look paired with advanced tech, the hybrid engine is still missing. It’s getting a little late in the year for the hybrid engine to emerge.
If the Rogue Hybrid is really in the works then it might debut in the summer as an option for 2025. A Rogue PHEV model would be really surprising.
