The Hyundai Sonata is one of the most popular and reliable sedans, even if it’s not known for its exciting performance. Although it’s available with a turbo engine, the one inside the Sonata N Line earns much more horsepower. Of course, the Sonata N Line is nearly $10,000 more than the base model, but we think it’s worth the spend.

The Hyundai Sonata N Line is so popular that it’s making its way to the big screen. According to Hyundai, the Sonata N Line appears in the Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Additionally, you might even be able to score a Sonata N Line inspired by the one in the movie.

Hyundai’s role in ‘Snake Eyes’

The N Line badge is proudly displayed on the red model that appears in the movie’s trailer. This Sonata N Line belongs to Snake Eyes, who receives training from the Arashikage clan. After saving the life of the clan’s heir apparent, Snake Eyes is welcomed by its members as a friend. However, outsiders from his past seek to mar that relationship.

We can see both a red and black Hyundai Sonata N Line in the trailer. The intense drifting on the darkened highway is likely only a fraction of what’s in the whole movie. Hyundai says that two of its other models (the Santa Fe and Elantra) make cameos as well.

A special edition ‘Snake Eyes’ Hyundai Sonata N Line

In honor of the black model in the movie, Hyundai will release the Sonata N Line Night Edition. According to HotCars, this model will feature blacked-out exterior accents, including the wheels. You can get the Night edition in either black or white at the same price of $35,755.

We’ll likely learn more about the complete list of features of this Night Edition upon its release later this year. Rest assured, it will have the same impressive mechanical specs as the current Sonata N Line model.

What makes the Hyundai Sonata N Line so good?

The Sonata N Line is powered by an exclusive turbo-four engine that produces 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. For comparison, the regular Sonata only gets a four-cylinder engine that produces 191 horsepower. The optional turbo-four engine generates up to 180 horsepower, but its acceleration comes much more easily.

Additionally, the Sonata N Line benefits from a sport-tuned suspension, bigger brakes, and a dual-clutch transmission. During Car and Driver‘s testing, the Hyundai Sonata N Line could reach 60 mph in a clean 5 seconds. It comes with launch control to reportedly reduce turbo lag, though it felt a bit unrefined during testing. 

Test drivers also weren’t impressed with the Sonata N Line’s heavy steering wheel. The Hyundai Sonata N Line is a thrill to drive around corners and grips the road with ease despite those minor complaints. Even with its sporty potential, the Sonata N Line is also a good cruiser when needed.

In addition to its special badging, the Sonata N Line is easily distinguishable with its lip spoiler and restyled front end. On the inside, it has cozy Nappa leather sport seats complemented with suede inserts. The Sonata N Line has room for five passengers, all of whom can stretch out without encroaching on anyone else’s personal space.

The Hyundai Sonata N Line also gets premium goodies like a panoramic sunroof, navigation, and a Bose sound system. It also gets the bigger touchscreen of the two options, which has standard smartphone integration, and almost every safety feature offered.

Hyundai lists the Sonata N Line as one of the priciest in the segment at $33,450, slightly lessening its appeal. Cheaper rivals like the Kia K5 are just as fun to drive and have extra features, including optional AWD. However, a viewing of Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins might make some drivers too starry-eyed to care.
