Sport Trucks Were Once a Thing: Will This 800hp Yenko/SC Silverado Resurrect Them?
When the GMT 400 GMC and Chevy pickups from 1988 entered the picture, they spawned a Sport Truck wave. Lowered with custom paint, rolled pans, fiberglass bumper covers to hide the chrome, and increased horsepower, they were a significant trend. Mostly applied to GMC and Chevy trucks, it would last for a decade or more before the trend died off. Now the Yenko performance name has been applied to a lowered Silverado with 800hp. Sport trucks were once a thing, will this Yenko Silverado resurrect the trend?
Yenko was one of the few Chevy dealerships that fielded a line of legendary performance cars
You remember Yenko; at least if you know your 1960s muscle cars. Yenko was one of the few Chevy dealerships that fielded a line of legendary performance Corvairs, Camaros, and Vegas. The Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, dealership cranked out “Yenkos” from the mid-1960s into the 1970s. Today Specialty Vehicle Engineering in Toms River, New Jersey, has the rights to the Yenko name. It has been doing Yenko Corvettes and Silverados that uphold the Yenko legacy.
This 2021 Yenko/SC Silverado gets started with a massaged 6.2-liter LT1 V8 putting out 800 hp and 720 lb-ft of torque. The massaging is extensive with forged pistons and crankshaft, ported heads for better breathing, a high-flow stainless steel exhaust system, and it’s all topped off with a supercharger. Also upgraded is the stock six-speed automatic making sure it can take the extra horsepower.
Besides the lowered suspension six-piston brake calipers and vented rotors are wrapped in 22-inch wheels. Those are wrapped in 305/45 tires. Besides lowering, better shocks, beefier sway bar and stiffer bushings in the rear also are able to handle the extra power.
We like the Yenko graphics which visually tie together the random factory sculpturing
Body mods are minimal but we like the Yenko graphics which visually tie together the random factory sculpturing Chevy felt it necessary to design. Unfortunately, there is virtually nothing that could be done with the front end. A large “Yenko/SC tries to help with little luck. A vented power bulge spiffs up the front with a custom embossed Yenko/SC tailgate adding some uniqueness.
Inside custom floor mats, Yenko/SC badges-in case you forgot, and door sill tread plates carry the theme throughout. You can also order your Yenko/SC Silverado with a leather trim package if you so choose.
The Yenko/SC package is available on every Chevy configuration
The Yenko/SC package is available on every Chevy configuration. That means 2WD or 4×4, and crew-cab or dual-cab bodies. Prices have not been announced but figure just under $50,000 for all of the mods and bits, above the initial purchase price. Yeah, it’s pricey, but nothing good is cheap, right?
To make your decision a little easier there will only be 50 Yenko/SC Silverado trucks made in 2021. So the exclusivity should make it so you won’t be seeing another one in your neighborhood any time soon.
