Spotted 2022 Ford Maverick With No Camo Ahead of Global Debut
Truck buyers in the U.S. are understandably excited for the affordable 2022 Ford Maverick. As the average price for a brand new truck soars into the stratosphere, this tiny Ford could be a hit amongst first-time buyers. While we’ve heard plenty of rumors surrounding its price and engine stats, we’ve never seen it without camouflage.
Thankfully, a viewer-submitted video over at The Fast Lane Truck on YouTube changes that. The viewer reportedly spotted the unreleased truck in San Diego out on the streets without any camo. Additionally, it was reportedly part of what might be the filming of a commercial.
Is this 2022 Ford Maverick production ready?
While seeing the 2022 Ford Maverick without camo is already a huge deal, what it was doing tells us even more information. As far as we know, this Escape-based truck went into production recently in Mexico. However, extensive camouflage had kept us from seeing its production-ready bodywork.
However, since this 2022 Ford Maverick was reportedly used to play a part in an unreleased commercial, this is likely the finished product. If it looks slightly different than the larger Ranger, that’s as a result of its underpinnings. Unlike its body-on-frame siblings, the new Maverick is based on the Escape and its unibody design.
Additionally, the 2022 Ford Maverick will primarily be front-wheel-drive with the option of adding all-wheel-drive as an optional extra. In terms of its rear suspension, Ford Authority reports that it will use a twist-beam setup which is cheaper to produce. As a result, this tiny truck will target an often forgotten price range.
What will power this tiny truck?
As far as engines go, The Fast Lane Truck reports that the 2022 Ford Maverick will share engine options with the Escape and Bronco Sport. As a result, expect to see a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder as the base engine option. In the Escape, the small engine develops 181 hp and 190 lb-ft. However, as TFLT points out, Ford might opt to re-tune it in search of more low-end torque.
If you move up to the higher trim levels, you might be able to score this truck with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. In the Escape, this powertrain develops 250 hp, more than enough for a tiny truck. Engine options aside, all of the rumors suggest that this tiny truck won’t break the bank.
When should we see the brand-new Maverick on the road?
If you’re at buying the 2022 Ford Maverick, there are two important bits of news. For starters, if Ford is already filming a commercial, chances are we’ll see this truck shortly. Secondly, as Motor1 points out, rumors suggest that this truck could start under $20,000.
However, expect the higher trim levels and larger engine options to push well into the $20,000 range. However, since the Bronco Sport starts at $26,820, Motor1 reports that the sub-$20,000 offering might be extremely bare. Regardless, this seems like a great product to lure budget-conscious truck buyers.
