We aren’t ready to say goodbye to the Mazda CX-9, but the Mazda CX-90 will be here faster than you think. The 2023 Mazda CX-90 will replace the CX-9 as a larger, more robust, and efficient option for families. Check it out. It looks massive. 

When will the 2023 Mazda CX-90 come out? 

Rumors suggest that the 2023 Mazda CX-90 will go into production by the end of 2022 to be available during the 2023 model year. The CX-90 is a three-row option that’s expected to arrive before the two-row Mazda CX-70. 

We can tell that we’re getting closer to seeing the CX-90 emerge as spy shots appear. According to Car and Driver, the CX-90 was spotted being tested in higher elevations of Colorado. 

This tracks as Mazda seeks to develop more rugged SUVs. Plus, if a hybrid or electric model comes out, it’s good to test the batteries in colder climates and at higher elevations to make sure they don’t lose charge. 

The CX-90 looks gigantic compared to the CX-9. It has a much higher roofline, larger facia, and seems to be stretched. It’s like some pulled on each corner of the Mazda CX-9. Also, it sort of looks like the Lincoln Aviator. 

We can’t wait to see how much bigger the third row is. One of the biggest complaints about the CX-9 is that the rear seats are too tiny. Also, there is a lack of cargo space that the CX-90 could solve. 

How much power does the CX-90 have? 

We’re still waiting to see which powertrains will be available with the 2023 Mazda CX-90. The spy shots indicate that the plug-in hybrid options are in the works. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV could use the new inline-six engine. 

The new 3.0-liter e-Skyactiv X engine is expected to deliver a smooth performance with an engaging sound while improving efficiency. The diesel version could be the M Hybrid variant that’s paired with a 48V hybrid setup to cut fuel consumption and lower emissions. 

The new engines are paired with a hydraulic converter instead of a torque converter. They use a multi-clutch plate for faster and smoother gear changes. This setup also saves space. 

However, the CX-90 could also use the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery pack. This setup could provide 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The Mazda CX-9 uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. 

How much does the CX-90 cost? 

We’re probably a few months away from learning the official 2023 Mazda CX-90 price. However, the Mazda CX-9 starts at $35,630. Because the CX-90 will be larger with more power and possibly a higher towing capacity, it could increase the price by a few thousand bucks. 

The CX-9 provides 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seas with up to 71.2 cubes total. The Kia Telluride has 21.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats with up to 87.0 cubes total. We’ve driven both, and the difference is massive. 

Also, the CX-9 can tow up to 3,500 lbs while the Telluride maxes out at 5,000 lbs. So, the CX-9 has some catching up to do. With the way the larger Mazda CX-50 turned out, we are confident that the CX-90 will be bigger, better, and more capable.
