The Standard 2023 Ford Ranger Is an Excellent Work Truck
You might want to scoop up a current Ford Ranger model before they’re all gone. The new generation is about to drop, and it’s safe to assume that prices will increase. But the 2023 Ford Ranger is a tough truck with a lot left to give.
Is the 2023 Ford Ranger a good work truck?
Yes, the 2023 Ford Ranger provides everything you need to get the job done. Plus, it’s robust, capable, and durable. It might not be the most comfortable or modern option in the world, but it’s affordable and long-lasting.
The Ford Ranger XL, or the base model, starts with an MSRP of $27,400, and the destination fee tacks on another $1,495. This price might seem high for a basic work truck first, but it has plenty of standard power.
With the turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, you get 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The entry-level Toyota Tacoma model is comparable in price but starts with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that only cranks out 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque.
Also, the entry-level Ranger has one USB port, 16-inch steel wheels, a manually locking tailgate, air conditioning, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 3.5-inch display, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a four-speaker auto system, and forward collision mitigation.
How much can the 2023 Ranger tow?
When properly equipped, the 2023 Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,905 lbs. Rivals like the Jeep Gladiator can tow up to 7,700 lbs, so it’s not far behind. The Nissan Frontier maxes out at 6,720 lbs.
The available Trailer Tow package for $495 adds a trailer brake controller, a class IV hitch, a seven-wire harness, a four/seven-pin connector, a hitch receiver, Tow/Haul modes, front tow hooks, and trailer sway control. The hitch receiver’s max tongue load is 750 lbs.
Without the trailering package, the Ranger can tow up to 3,500 lbs. If you wait for the 2024 Ranger, it could have a towing bar and a new 360-degree camera display to make the job a little easier.
You might want to consider adding 4×4 as well, which is the kicker. It costs about $3,645 to upgrade from RWD.
Off-roading upgrades are available too. There are various add-ons, but you have to upgrade to the Ranger XLT to access the Tremor Off-Road package, which costs $4,209.
Edmunds shared that it includes revised suspension tuning, a 0.8-inch lift, Fox shocks, 32-inch tires, skid plates, side steps, and auxiliary switches for custom accessories.
Is the 2023 Ranger reliable?
Yes, the 2023 Ford Ranger is a reliable truck, so it’s a work truck you can depend on. The Ranger has a predicted reliability rating of 86 out of 100 from J.D.Power. This is an above-average score.
The average Ranger model is expected to make it past 300,000 miles. It can provide over 20 years of service on the road. But don’t forget that proper care and regular maintenance are the keys to longevity.
While the current Ranger is clearly aging, it’s still worth considering. The basic model is an affordable, capable, and reliable work truck. The tow package can be added without breaking the bank.
Stay tuned for the latest updates. We should see how the new Ford Ranger compares in only a few more weeks.
