It feels like automakers didn’t have enough SUVs to go around. However, as supply chains ease and production gets back on track, some brands are facing an overstock. Stellantis is the latest company to temporarily stop production due to a potential overstock of Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee models.

Declining sales are only getting worse for Stellantis and Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee models pile up.

While the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most popular SUV in the lineup, it’s not selling as well as Stellantis would like.

Two production facilities in Toledo, Ohio have been temporarily closed as Stellantis makes production adjustments. Rumors suggest that the factories will reopen next Thursday.

As Stellantis continues to take necessary actions to improve operations in the U.S. market, it faces some of the highest inventory levels in the industry.

Some critics feel that the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee inventory levels are related to higher prices and not enough promotions compared to rivals.

Stellantis trucks and SUVs have been struggling to move vehicles for a while, resulting in a 21% sales drop during the first half of 2024.

Rumors about cutting some of the underperforming brands have been circulating. However, Stellantis CEO, Carlos Tavares recently shared that no brands are for sale.

Each brand has until 2031 to turn a profit. That gives the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee a few years to improve.

Stellatnis is focused on maintaining profit margins and controlling costs while continuing to primarily invest in electric vehicles.

One could argue that Stellantis should delay its EV research like Ford, Chevrolet, and Volvo have to focus on existing vehicles.

Currently, Stellantis plans to try and turn things around by trimming production and reducing prices to clear excess inventory.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a few more models get discontinued like the beloved and neglected Jeep Renegade and Jeep Cherokee.
