It’s fair in this day and age to refer to Stellantis as a dumpster fire. Sales are declining, executives are leaving, production issues are increasing, and now there could be another cog in the machine. Stallantis workers might go on strike.

Stellantis workers might strike over the Belvidere plant

Remember when the United Auto Workers strike closed tons of auto manufacturing plants for six weeks? Ford, Stellantis, and Chevrolet are still recovering from tremendous delays.

But Stellantis has a problem on its hands as more people consider going on strike. Stellantis workers are frustrated over potential broken agreements.

After the strike, Stellantis agreed to reopen the Belvidere plant in Illinois in 2024 and to really start ramping up production in 2025.

This agreement included bolstering the Belvidere facility with a $3,2 billion EV battery plant, a $1.5 million mid-size truck plant, and an additional 5,000 jobs in the area by 2028.

But employees say that Stellantis is going back on its commitments and is driving a race to the bottom at the expense of American workers.

Allegedly, Stellantis shared that the Belvidere Consolidated Mega Mopar Hub won’t open in 2024, it will not begin stamping for the Mega Hub in 2025, and it will not build mid-size trucks in 2027.

Reportedly, failing to launch and fund these operations violates the United States Investment letter in the P&M and OC&E Bargaining Agreements.

Stellantis workers want things to stick to their original schedule for job security as this may impact all Stellantis plants. Filing the grievance is the first step for authorizing a strike and they’re ready to make a move.

The Belvidere plant used to make the Jeep Cherokee until it closed in 2023. Also, Stellantis has already laid off roughly 47,000 workers globally.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Traverse will continue to make cuts to bring more EVs to market, increase profits, and double revenue to $325 billion by 2030. However, it needs workers to build products to sell.
