STOP-SALE: Chevy Silverado and Sierra Roofs Are Splitting Apart
It’s literally not the best time to buy a new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra. These trucks just got a stop-sale due to a massive issue that needs to be corrected. Some 2024 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra models with this problem may have been sold.
2024 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra roofs are splitting open
Imagine taking a ride in your 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra 1500 then suddenly getting hit with high winds, moisture, loud whistling, and debris from above. This could be a real concern as the roofs are prone to ripping apart.
General Motors issued a stop-sale for these trucks in an attempt to correct the problem before they’re delivered or sold to customers.
The trucks could have roof panels that begin to crack and split on the passenger side. The tearing location is under the roof molding and can be difficult to spot.
Without repairing the roof, the risk of danger, interior corrosion, and water leaks greatly increases. It’s unclear what is causing the problem.
Nearly 3,067 trucks in America may be at risk. Some models could be sold, while others are in new dealer inventory.
New inventory will not be sold until the roofs are fixed. There’s a chance that a recall will be issued for models that were already sold.
Dealerships have the VINs of the impacted models and will reach out to involved customers. If your truck needs to be repaired, but you haven’t been contacted, call your local dealership and reference, ‘Customer Satisfaction Program N232421270 Passenger Side Roof Panel Joint’.
How to fix the Silverado and GMC roofs
General Motors technicians are fixing roofs on the 2024 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra by welding pieces back together. First, the roof will be carefully inspected as the passenger panel is removed.
Then if a crack is found, holes are drilled at each end of the roof crack to prevent it from spreading. Next, the roof is MIG welded and repainted before anti-corrosion material and seam sealer are applied to the underside of the area.
The repair is performed at no cost to customers and may take about 10 hours to complete. Loaner vehicles will be offered during the repair. Stay tuned as we track this story. We feel like the issue could spread!
