Subaru Crosstrek

If you’re looking for a little SUV, Subaru’s Crosstrek is a worthy choice. The Crosstrek competes with the likes of the Jeep Renegade. Critics appreciate the Crosstrek for its comfort and its sporty style. For 2020, the Crosstrek is standard with a 152-hp four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission. The available continuously variable transmission is the better option to go with.

The main drawback of the Crosstek is that its base engine is sluggish. However, Subaru acknowledged this complaint by adding a 182-hp,2.5-liter four-cylinder as an option for 2021. Additionally, this Subaru is available as a hybrid. And like the other options on this list, the Crosstrek comes standard with a 6.5-inch infotainment display, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.

Subaru Forester

The Forester is the Crosstrek’s bigger sibling. The Forester is worth the upgrade over the Crosstrek for more standard features such as Subaru’s EyeSight suite of advanced safety features. These features include adaptive cruise control and lane departure prevention.

The Forester comes with the same 182-hp four-cylinder that’s also standard on the Outback and available on the Crosstrek. While it doesn’t stand out for its speed, the Forester remains as one of the more compelling compact SUVs of the year. The Forester comes Subaru’s signature all-wheel-drive, and it’s off-road capable. Furthermore, the Forester offers excellent driver’s visibility.

Subaru Outback

With the Outback, you get the functionality of a midsize SUV and a wagon. It’s comfortable on- and off-road, making it an ideal choice for adventurers and families. Nothing truly rivals the Outback, which is why Car and Driver gave it an Editor’s Choice Award for Best Station Wagon in 2020.

We celebrate the Outback for its simplicity, but it gets more luxury-focused as you climb up its trim levels. Car and Driver recommends the Premium trim level for the right balance of value and amenities. However, critics like U.S. News aren’t as sold on the Outback’s available turbo-four that makes 260-hp.

Subaru Ascent

The Ascent is the biggest Subaru you can buy. This three-row SUV can seat up to eight, and even adults will be comfortable riding in the back. On the flip side, the Ascent doesn’t offer the most cargo space, but it doesn’t need to. What it lacks in cargo space, it makes up for in performance capabilities and tech.

Subaru gambled with the Ascent’s engine, but it seems to be paying off. The Ascent features a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder that provides satisfying power and it feels sporty too. For 2021, the Ascent now comes with steering-responsive LED headlights and an updated adaptive cruise control function.
