There’s no shortage of racing heritage when it comes to Subaru. This is especially true in the case of three letters: STI. Subaru Tecnica International is the motorsports division of Subaru. However, when even the STI wasn’t quite spicy enough, a company called Prodrive stepped in to really turn the heat up. Now, they’re doing so again with a restoration program to build a relentless Subaru Impreza Restomod to rival the iconic 22B STI.

The story behind the Prodrive P25 Subaru Impreza Restomod and its insane price tag

According to Top Gear, the Prodrive P25 comes in with a cool price tag of £552,000. At current exchange rates, that puts this spicy Subaru at about $700,000 USD. While that may seem a bit insane, the car is quite a bit more than just a tuned-up GC8 Subaru Impreza. Think more along the lines of Guntherworks or Singer Porsche 911s.

Top Gear spoke with a representative from Prodrive who dove into the price. After all, without knowing much about it, that price may seem entirely out of left field. However, once you dive into it a bit, it starts to make a bit more sense.

“We’ve been working on the development of this car for more than 12 months already. It is bespoke: the engine, gearbox, drivetrain, and suspension have all been developed specifically for the P25 using the latest technology. The bodyshell has been extensively reworked with extensive use of carbon to make it lightweight, and we’ve applied all our motorsport experience to effectively give it the performance of a tarmac WRC,” Prodrive told Top Gear.

Similar to the Garage Active R32 Skyline GT-R, the Prodrive P25 is largely made of carbon fiber. That, in its own right, is a monumental expense. However, the bespoke engine and transmission, said to deliver 400 horsepower, also likely come with a heft price tag. That, combined with decades of Prodrive racing heritage, all combine to form this superb vehicle with an outlandish asking price.

Prodrive will display the P25 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. That may be your last chance to see one, too, as the company is only making 25 examples.

What is Prodrive?

If the name Prodrive doesn’t ring any bells to you, you’re well and truly missing out. The company has decades of racing heritage with a nearly unfathomable amount of wins.

According to the company’s website, Prodrive competed in its first event, the 1984 Qatar International Rally, with a Porsche 911 SC that the company built. Since then, the company has gone on to win 6 FIA World Rally titles, 8 FIA World Sportscar titles, 6 Le Mans titles, 4 British Touring Car titles, and a Le Mans Series title. Additionally, Prodrive finished BAR F1 2nd in the 2004 F1 Constructors’ World Championship.

Though the company is most well-known for its 19-year association with Subaru, it also modifies various other brands for competition. Some other cars it has built and won with include the Ferrari F550 Maranello and the Aston Martin DB9.

So, while Prodrive may not be as much of a household name as the likes of Shelby, it is far more than just another tuning company. Prodrive is a historic racing company with remarkable history to back the price tag of the new P25 Subaru Impreza Restomod.

Without a doubt, the lucky few that can afford to purchase one are going to enjoy having it in their collections.
