How much do people really miss the Subaru Baja? Is it enough to push for a Subaru Wilderness truck for off-roading? We’re thinking yes. With the way small trucks are exploding in the market, a Subaru truck could be a great addition. 

Could the Subaru Wilderness truck really happen? 

We hope it happens. Once we saw the renderings of a Subaru Wilderness truck by Subtle Solutions, we became a little obsessed with the idea of a new Subaru truck. They sell exterior, interior, and engine equipment to enhance Subaru models. 

Their site even includes equipment for the Subaru Baja, which was discontinued in 2006. If people are still modifying the little Subaru truck, then it has to still be popular. We hope Subaru is working to fill the void. 

Other manufacturers are jumping on the little truck trend. The new Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick are taking the market by storm. Rumors suggest that a tiny Chevy truck and the Ram 700 could emerge soon. 

What would a Subaru truck be like? 

The Subaru Wilderness truck would have to make up for some of the issues that the Subaru Baja faced. It was too small and a little expensive. It failed to offer a luxury interior with its price. It just didn’t sell well, which is unfortunate because it held its value well. 

It came with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 165 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. With that engine, it was a little sluggish. But you could upgrade to the Baja Turbo for 210 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. 

Plus, the Baja came with standard all-wheel drive, which is an excellent perk. But the truck could only carry a payload of up to 1,050 lbs and tow up to 2,400 lbs. The Maverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs, and the Santa Cruz can tow up to 5,000 lbs. 

With the FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine, the Subaru Wilderness truck could have nearly 300 hp. It would also have more torque for towing. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system would be a perfect fit for a unibody truck too. 

Also, the new Subaru Global Platform that underpins the Ascent would serve as a great option. It could be used for the truck without the need for significant changes. By turning the trunk area into a bed, Subaru could provide a spacious and capable four-door truck. 

How would the Ascent platform help a truck? 

The Subaru Wilderness truck could be manufactured beside the three-row Subaru Ascent in Lafayette, Indiana. It could share the same direct-injection four-cylinder Boxer engine too. Also, the Subaru truck could have a 9.4-inch ground clearance, like the Outback, and benefit from similar suspension upgrades. Imagine how capable this truck could be with the Subaru dual-function X-Mode all-terrain AWD system. 

A new truck with modern Subaru styling that’s been enhanced for a more confident look with a larger bumper and hood scoop has the potential to look great. LED headlights, accent badging, and black alloy wheels would complete the look. 

But this Subaru truck is just a rumor for now. Subaru could be working on a truck for late 2022 or 2023. But nothing has officially been confirmed. Until then, at least we can dream.
