According to J.D.Power and its 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the 2019 Nissan Frontier is the most reliable truck from its model year. The study is in its 33rd year and measures the total number of issues experienced by original owners of three-year-old vehicles.

J.D.Power gathered responses from about 30,000 original owners of 2019 model-year vehicles. The VDS includes 184 specific problems reported by 2019 vehicle owners that fall into nine more significant categories: driving experience, interior, comfort, infotainment, climate features, tech, driving assistance, and exterior features.

For 2022, J.D. Power added the measure of satisfaction with the vehicle’s condition after three years, software updates, and the driver-assistance. The Nissan Frontier earned the best score compared to rivals like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, and more.

Is the 2019 Frontier a good truck?

Yes, the 2019 Nissan Frontier is a great truck. Not only is the Frontier reliable, but it’s an affordable work-truck option with plenty of capability. It also provides pretty good driving dynamics.

You might be able to find a 2019 Frontier with a manual transmission, which is becoming a rare treat. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine pumps out 152 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque. We recommend using the 4.0-liter V6 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque instead.

When properly equipped, the 2019 Frontier can tow up to 6,720 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,505 lbs. This is a little behind rivals. The 2019 Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs.

But keep in mind that the Frontier doesn’t have the best manners on the pavement. It’s a little slow compared to rivals with sloppy steering and squishy brakes. But the handling is responsive, and it has a fairly smooth ride.

The 2019 model was before the redesign, so that the interior may seem a little outdated. However, the materials are durable and easy to clean. A 7-inch touchscreen comes standard, but modern amenities such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t available.

The 2019 Nissan Frontier doesn’t have many complaints listed. It only has nine issues reported on Car Complaints. Five problems were reported about the powertrain, making it the most common issue.

Owners reported a clunking noise from the transmission while going over bumps, not being able to place the truck in selected gears, and randomly going into limp mode.

Limp mode is a security feature that turns off certain features like the air conditioning and reduces the vehicle’s speed when a fault is detected by the transmission control unit. Typically the vehicle needs to be restarted to be taken out of limp mode.

The 2019 Frontier has one recall for the backup camera because it failed to display an image. But this issue has been corrected.

Overall the 2019 Nissan Frontier is a little outdated and basic, but that’s fine. It’s an affordable work truck that’s highly dependable.
